CAT Admission Process

In this second stage of the CAT Selection Procedure, candidates will have to appear for the Group Discussion, Written Ability Test and Personal Interview rounds. While Personal Interview round is common in all the B-schools’ admission process, GD and WAT rounds vary from B-School to B-School. The process is discussed below:

  • Written Ability Test (WAT)
  • Group Discussions (GD)
  • Personal Interviews (PI)

Group discussion

Over the past few years, this round is less preferred but it is wise to prepare for this round as well. In this round, a group of 8-10 candidates is given a topic to discuss. Through this round, a candidate’s performance and group dynamics are assessed. However, some business schools are still having the GD round with Written Ability Test.

Written Ability Test

WAT is basically a test to analyze a management aspirant’s writing skills and coherency & clarity of thought process. Comprises of one or more topics on which a candidate is required to write a brief essay. The time duration assigned to write an essay on the given topic varies from IIM to IIM and can be anywhere between 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

Personal Interview

After the Group discussion (GD) and Written Ability Test (WAT) rounds, the candidates are required to go through the Personal Interview (PI). It usually taken by a group associated with the IIM, be it the faculty, ex-faculty or in some cases even alumni. In this round, a candidate has to appear before a panel of 4-8 interviewers who test the candidate on their academic background, work experience, hobbies, interests etc.

Along with the GD, PI and WAT rounds, the top B-schools also consider the past academic records, extra-curricular activities, work experience in the candidate's profile.

All the candidates shortlisted for the WAT and PI will be required to go through the eligibility verification process. They will be required to be present on the scheduled date with all the necessary proofs and documents for the verification at the respective Institutes.
