CAT 2018 Topper Siddhant Dhawan secured 99.28 percentile in the exam. His sectional percentiles for VARC, DILR and QA being 96.93, 99.45 and 97.57 respectively. Was this his first attempt at CAT?

Yes, CAT 2018 was his first attempt at this exam.

As per Siddhant, coaching plays a vital role in one’s preparation. It helps in maintaining a schedule. In addition to regularity, it also gives one the sense of competitiveness of the exam ultimately leading one to working harder and scoring better. Having your doubts clarified is also a major advantage of coaching institutes, as per him.

What was his preparation strategy for CAT 2018?

Siddhant insists on clearing the basic concepts first and then moving on to mock tests. He shares that he was done with the basics of DILR and QA till the month of June. From July he started taking mocks and analyzing them comprehensively. Siddhant comments, “It is very important that you analyze your mistakes made in the mocks and don’t repeat them. I even made a notebook for all the different types of questions I came across any mock and also for some mistakes which I was making frequently so that I don’t repeat them again.” Check CAT Preparation Tips

Here are insights to his section wise preparation strategy:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: Siddhant thinks there is no better alternative than ‘reading’ for this section. One can read any form of texts like novels. plays, poems etc. Once the grip on reading has improved, one can move to reading newspaper editorials. As in addition to enhancing one’s vocabulary and grammar, newspapers also add to one’s general knowledge and awareness.
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning: Siddhant categorizes his efforts for DILR section into three steps. First is to start with basic problem solving which involves line charts, pie charts, bar charts, venn diagrams etc. Second step is to start solving sets from previous year papers. Third and the final step is to do sets with the specific time limit which the exam allows.
  • Quantitative Ability: He insists on completing the basics of quants first and then proceeding to sectional or chapter wise tests. One must maintain the speed while solving the tests as it plays a key role in the exam.

To what extent did he find Mock Tests and Previous years’ Question Papers useful?

According to Siddhant, mock test series plays the most important role while preparing for CAT. It contributes to the formation of an efficient preparation strategy for the exam and also makes one familiar with the exam pressure. He shares that during his last month of preparation for CAT 2018, he took 25 mock tests. He would take them in his coaching institute in the morning and dedicate his evenings for analyzing the same.

Any particular strategy that he followed on the exam day?

Siddhant insists on a good sleep before the exam day. He advises the future aspirants to start indulging in relaxing activities a couple of days before the exam, which will enable one to take the exam with a free mind. He further adds that one should take the exam like the mock tests and apply the same tried and tested strategies on the final day.
