CAT 2019 Exam Pattern

CAT is an online computer based test which is conducted in the last week of December every year. Common Admission Test(CAT) is a national level examination managed by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) on a rotational basis.

  • CAT will comprise 100 Questions divided into three sections. Questions are of both types - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs.
  • CAT 2019 will be 180 minutes test. There will be a sectional time-limit of 60 minutes per section.
  • The question paper will be in English Language only.
  • Candidates will be awarded three marks for each right answer while one mark will be deducted from candidate’s score for each wrong answer.
  • The three sections included in CAT 2019 are- Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability.
  • The test is scheduled for two shifts usually, however, it depends upon the number of applicants.

CAT examination is held every year for admission in the Post-Graduate Business Administration Program for the various IIM, IIT, NITs and many other Government and private institutions located in India.

CAT 2019 Exam Pattern

CAT 2019 will be conducted in online mode. The question paper will contain 100 questions of both types - Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs) having four options and non-Multiple Choice Questions(non-MCQs).

It will be divided into three sections: Verbal and Reading Comprehension section, Quantitative Aptitude section and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.

The duration of the exam will be 180 minutes (60 minutes for each section). Candidates will be awarded three marks for each right answer while one mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

  • Question paper will have 100 Questions divided into three sections

  • Total time for the exam will be 180 minutes.
  • The questions will be asked in English.

CAT 2019 Exam Pattern: Section wise Exam Pattern

Verbal and Reading Comprehension

This section will have questions from English language and grammar. It tests a candidate’s language and comprehension skills. A total of 34 questions will be asked from this section which will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs.

  • The comprehension questions will test the ability to comprehend the meaning from a given passage.
  • Questions about the language usage and their rules are also expected to appear in the exam. Testing the understanding of basic grammar is also part of the exam.
  • Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

This section will focus on two aspects- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. Questions from Data Interpretation (DI) focus on a candidate’s ability to derive conclusions from a given set of data. There will be a total of 32 questions from this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ & 8 Non-MCQs.

  • Logical Reasoning (LR) section tests a candidate’s logical thinking and its application to everyday problems.
  • Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section focuses on numerical problems and will test a candidate’s mathematical knowledge. It is a test of speed, accuracy, and precision. There is a total of 34 questions in this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs. Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

CAT 2019 Marking Scheme

CAT Paper will have two types of questions – MCQs and Non-MCQs. Both the type of questions will carry equal marks. There will be total 100 Questions.

For every correct answer, candidates will be awarded 3 marks while 1 mark will be deducted from candidates’ score for each incorrect answer. No mark will be given or deducted for the question left blank/unanswered.

CAT 2019 Important Instructions

These are some important instructions for CAT 2019 that candidates should follow.

  • No candidate will be allowed to appear at the examination centre other than that allotted to him/her in the Admit Card.
  • No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination centre/hall after the commencement of examination.
  • After the invigilator has verified CAT 2019 Admit Card of the candidate, he must sign on the attendance sheet in the presence of the invigilator and mention the hall ticket number also.
  • The candidate should follow the instructions given by the invigilators in the examination room
  • Candidates should not indulge in an argument with the invigilators or other staff involved in the examination duty at the examination centre.
  • The candidate should neither talk to each other nor discuss any matter during the examination.
  • The candidate should not disturb other candidates in the examination room and maintain complete silence during the examination.
  • Candidates are not permitted to carry any electronic device and study material at examination hall like (Mobile, Bluetooth, Pager, watch, test series, books, model papers, etc.)
  • The decision of the conducting body shall be final in all matters.
