CAT 2019 Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme and Syllabus

CAT is an online computer based test which is conducted on the second sunday of November every year. The exam is conducted for the candidates seeking admission in MBA/PGDM programs at various IIMs, IITs, NITs and other Government and private institutions located in India.

  • CAT 2019 is expected to be conducted on November 24, 2019 by IIM Kozhikode.
  • As per CAT Eligibility, students should have a bachelors degree with minimum required marks from a required university or Institute. 
  • Total 100 questions are to be solved in three hours of duration. Check Detailed CAT Exam Pattern
  • Both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs type questions are asked.
  • There are total three sections, i.e., Verbal & Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude. Also Check CAT Sample Papers

CAT 2019 is scheduled for two shifts. However, it depends upon the number of applicants. CAT Syllabus will be based on the fundamentals of 10+2 curriculum.


CAT 2019 Exam Pattern in Detail

The paper is divided into three sections viz Verbal and Reading Comprehension section, Quantitative Aptitude section and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning having 100 Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs) and non-Multiple Choice Questions(non-MCQs).

  • Total marks will be 300.
  • Total time for the exam will be 180 minutes (60 minutes for each section).
  • The questions will be asked in English language only.
  • Candidates will be awarded 3 marks for each right answer while 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

CAT 2019 Exam Pattern: Section wise Exam Pattern

Verbal and Reading Comprehension

This section will have questions from the English language and grammar. It tests a candidate’s language and comprehension skills. A total of 34 questions will be asked from this section, which will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs.

  • The comprehension questions will test the ability to comprehend the meaning from a given passage.
  • Questions about language usage and their rules are also expected to appear in the exam. Testing the understanding of basic grammar is also part of the exam.
  • Candidates reading and verbal ability will be examined in this section. 
  • Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

This section will focus on two aspects-Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. Subjects from Data Interpretation (DI) focus on a candidate’s ability to derive conclusions from a given set of data. There will be a total of 32 questions from this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ & 8 Non-MCQs.

  • Logical Reasoning (LR) section tests a candidate’s logical thinking and its application to everyday problems.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section focuses on numerical problems and will test a candidate’s mathematical knowledge. It is a test of speed, accuracy, and precision. There is a total of 34 questions in this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs. Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

CAT 2019 Marking Scheme

CAT paper will have two types of question MCQs and Non-MCQs. Both types of questions will carry equal marks. There will be a total of 100 questions.

CAT 2019 Important Instructions

Below given are some important instructions for the candidates appearing in CAT exam.

  • No candidate will be allowed to appear at the examination center other than that allotted center in the Admit Card.
  • No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination center/hall after the commencement of the examination.
  • After the invigilator has verified CAT 2019 Admit Card of the candidate, he must sign on the attendance sheet in the presence of the invigilator and mention the hall ticket number also.
  • Candidate should follow the instructions given by the invigilators in the examination room.
  • Candidates should not indulge in an argument with the invigilators or other staff involved in the examination duty at the examination center.
  • The candidate should neither talk to each other nor discuss any matter during the examination.
  • The candidate should not disturb other candidates in the examination room and maintain complete silence during the examination.
  • Candidates are not permitted to carry any electronic device and study material at examination hall like (Mobile, Bluetooth, Pager, watch, test series, books, model papers, etc.)
  • The decision of the conducting body shall be final in all matters.
