CAT 2019 Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme, Syllabus

CAT is an online computer based test which is conducted in the last week of December every year for admission in MBA/PGDM programs at the various IIM, IIT, NITs and many other Government and private institutions located in India. The exam will comprise 100 Questions divided into three sections. Questions are of both types - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs.

Common Admission Test (CAT) is a national level examination managed by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) on a rotational basis. CAT 2019 is scheduled for two shifts, however, it depends upon the number of applicants. The syllabus will be based on the fundamentals of 10+2 curriculum.


CAT 2019 Exam Pattern in Detail

CAT 2019 will be conducted in online mode. The paper is divided into three sections viz Verbal and Reading Comprehension section, Quantitative Aptitude section and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning having 100 Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs) and non-Multiple Choice Questions(non-MCQs).

  • Total marks will be 300.
  • Total time for the exam will be 180 minutes (60 minutes for each section).
  • The questions will be asked in English language only.
  • Candidates will be awarded 3 marks for each right answer while 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

CAT 2019 Exam Pattern: Section wise Exam Pattern

Verbal and Reading Comprehension

This section will have questions from English language and grammar. It tests a candidate’s language and comprehension skills. A total of 34 questions will be asked from this section which will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs.

  • The comprehension questions will test the ability to comprehend the meaning from a given passage.
  • Questions about the language usage and their rules are also expected to appear in the exam. Testing the understanding of basic grammar is also part of the exam.
  • Candidates will have to complete this section in 60 minutes.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

This section will focus on two aspects-Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. Subjects from Data Interpretation (DI) focus on a candidate’s ability to derive conclusions from a given set of data. There will be a total of 32 questions from this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ & 8 Non-MCQs.

  • Logical Reasoning (LR) section tests a candidate’s logical thinking and its application to everyday problems.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section focuses on numerical problems and will test a candidate’s mathematical knowledge. It is a test of speed, accuracy, and precision. There is a total of 34 questions in this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs. CAT 2019 Marking Scheme

CAT Paper will have two types of question MCQs and Non-MCQs. Both the type of questions will carry equal marks. There will be total 100 Questions.

CAT 2019 Syllabus is not predefined. As per trend, the questions can be asked from any topics of Verbal and Reading Comprehension section, Quantitative Aptitude section and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.

CAT 2019 Important Instructions

These are some important instructions for CAT that candidates should follow.

  • No candidate will be allowed to appear at the examination centre other than that allotted to him/her in the Admit Card.
  • No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination centre/hall after the commencement of examination.
  • After the invigilator has verified CAT 2019 Admit Card of the candidate, he must sign on the attendance sheet in the presence of the invigilator and mention the hall ticket number also.
  • The candidate should follow the instructions given by the invigilators in the examination room
  • Candidates should not indulge in an argument with the invigilators or other staff involved in the examination duty at the examination centre.
  • The candidate should neither talk to each other nor discuss any matter during the examination.
  • The candidate should not disturb other candidates in the examination room and maintain complete silence during the examination.
  • Candidates are not permitted to carry any electronic device and study material at examination hall like (Mobile, Bluetooth, Pager, watch, test series, books, model papers, etc.)
  • The decision of the conducting body shall be final in all matters.
