CAT Preparation Tips by Rachit Sheth

Rachit Sheth appeared for CAT in 2014 and scored 93.89 percentile. He took admission in Great Lakes Institute of Management. Apart from sharing his experience of appearing in CAT, he has also shared some valuable Preparation Tips which will help you score a good percentile in CAT 2017.

CAT Preparation Tips

Ques. In which year you appeared for CAT and what percentile did you score?

Ans. I appeared for CAT in 2014 and scored 93.89. This percentile helped me in applying to some great institutes other than the IIMs. 

Ques. How many mock GD-PI did you attend?

Ans. Appearing for mock GD-PI is very important in order to clear the selection procedure rounds. Mock rounds help you understand the necessity & requirements and allows to prepare in a focused manner. I appeared for a total of 5 GD-PI sessions before I finally attended the selection procedure rounds.

Ques. Which are the institutes which offered you admission to the MBA programs and where did you take admission?

Ans. I was offered admission by some top ranked institutes such as Great Lakes Institute of Management, IMI Delhi and Goa Institute of Management. It was a tough choice but I finally selected Great Lakes Institute of Management.

Ques. Apart from CAT, which other exams did you appear for?

Ans. Other than CAT, I appeared for XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test), NMAT (Narsee Monjee Management Test), SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Testand IIFT (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade).

Ques. What was your mode of preparation?

Ans. Apart from self-study, I also attended classroom coaching to ensure a good percentile in CAT 2014.

Ques. How did you manage CAT preparation schedule alongside graduation study or working hours?

Ans. It gets tough to prepare for CAT while working but then if scheduled properly, things become easier. I utilized my free time during office hours to read or catch up on current affairs. I used to read while travelling. I also devoted ample time to learning and mastering shortcut techniques to help solve problems faster.

Ques. How did you prepare for CAT Quantitative Aptitude Section? 

Ans. You will need to focus on each topic separately and attempt all kinds of problems from all these topics.

  1. Practice 5-year questions asked in the quant section
  2. Notice the pattern and practice more questions of the similar pattern especially the complex ones. 
  3. Devote equal time to each chapter.
  4. Follow online tutorials and youtube videos to learn tricks for solving lengthy problems.
  5. Practice formulas and tricks regularly.

Ques. What are the tips for preparing Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section?

AnsFor answering DI  questions

  1. Practice all kind of graphs and charts.
  2. Solve 10-year question papers.
  3. Practice quick calculation. 
  4. Attempt mock tests and analyze your performance

Tips for LR Section:

  1. Make a list of the different kinds of problems asked in this section.
  2. Go through the questions carefully and note the pattern of questions asked.
  3. Solve Puzzles online or in magazines.

Ques. How did you prepare for CAT Verbal ability and Reading Comprehension section?

Ans. Tips for Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension section

  1. Buy a decent grammar book and practice exercises.
  2. Start reading books or e-books. If you are not much of a reader, then you should cultivate the habit of reading asap.
  3. Solve previous year papers.
  4. Read newspapers to build vocabulary. 

ReadPreparation tips for CAT VA & RC section

Ques. What is your five point rule to excel CAT 2017?

Ans. I followed the below-mentioned success tips  to ace CAT 2017

  1. Time Management
  2. Self-study
  3. Concepts should be clear
  4. Take proper sleep and meditate, if possible.
  5. Practice mock tests and don't be depressed if you score less. Make the weaker sections your stronger ones and don't be complacent for stronger sections.

Ques. What should be the strategy for someone who is starting just two months before the exam?

Ans. There is no time to think too much as you don't have such sufficient time, anyways just try to clear the basic fundamentals, know the CAT Exam Pattern well and make your strategy. Try to solve various type of questions instead of the same ones. Try to understand what is your strong area and work on that as well as work on your weak areas. But mostly try to remember the shortcuts and easy ways to solve the problems.
