Ways to strengthen vocabulary

Here are few useful techniques to help one speak well and score well.

Make Association

This is one common method to remember things. We generally tend to remember things when we associate it with our memory. Similar is the case with memorizing words. For instance, when one hear the word umbrella; the mind automatically associate it with rain and the time when one last used it.

Thus, whenever someone hears a new word search for its meaning and make a certain association with the memory so, that when one hears the word next time one can make an immediate identification of its meaning. Adapting this method would lead to longer retention of the word as a part of the vocabulary.

Identify the Roots

This is one of the best methods to build a strong vocabulary from the knowledge of existing word bank. If one can identify the root word associated with any given word, then someone can catch the meaning of the word without knowing that what it means. For example, if someone knows that the root word ‘Re’ is for repletion or repeating something again him/her would be able to identify the word easily where ‘Re’ is attached, like re-election.

Thus, by catching the root of the word, infer the meaning of many words where a single root word is used. This would save time from rote learning of words and their meanings which would provide a logical way to build vocabulary.

Mapping in your Mind

Mind mapping or use of a mind map is another method for memorizing and retaining things for a longer period. Candidates can utilize this technique to lay a strong foundation for their word base.

In this technique one is required to build a map of words associated with a common genre like words associated with politics, anatomy, sociology, science etc. This technique is effective given the fact that it groups down or bunches the words into a pack that is seen associated with a common link. Initially, you should prepare mind maps on paper and later try to memorize them by building links.

Maintain a Record

Keep a diary or notebook where one can keep a record or listing of all the words that one has come across in a day. Candidates can use a diary to make a record in form of mind maps as well.

This record notebook/diary would help one in time of revision as well as for adding new words to the vocabulary on daily basis. This is a tried and tested method for building vocabulary over a period which has shown results in a good number of cases.

Read and enrich

The more candidates read, the more they are exposed to the rich and varied words that can become a part of your vocabulary. The reading of newspaper like The Hindu, The Indian express etc. is a common advice that is tendered to candidates preparing for the competitive examination that has English as a component of assessment.

It is a scientific fact that we learn things by reading sequentially and regularly enriches our word base in the language. Apart from daily newspaper reading candidates can try to which develop a habit of reading good English novels, plays, dramas, and fiction. This would not only enhance the vocabulary but would also add to the habit of reading and would channelize a good investment for the time.

After working on the vocabulary part, what a candidate need is to ensure the speed and accuracy. To build on your speed, start solving the previous year papers in a time-bound manner. Check for the accuracy and work on those areas which are affecting one’s score. For mock practice and previous year questions, refer to Objective general English by S.P. Bakshi.

Following the strategy mentioned above will help filling one’s basket of words in a short span of time. The key is to maintain consistency and persistence.
