CAT 2018 NEWS
NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE TEST
Fate of lakhs of candidates was decided on January 9, 2018, when CAT cutoff for IIM Ahmadabad & Bangalore were announced. Students who secured 99 percentile were the most disheartened, because even after their huge effort, they could not make to the top two IIM’s.
Only students with 100 percentile or 99.99 with no sectional dips were able to break through the cut off barrier laid by IIM A & B. However, this year, IIM Ahmadabad did not release any statement on this difference like the last year they used to display ‘sorry you have not been shortlisted’.
As there were plenty of aspirants who secured 99 percentile in CAT Exam, the lack of diversity in the academic background and the dip in the sectional score were the two main reasons why candidates could not make to IIM Ahmadabad.
CAT 2017 Result was announced in the online mode on January 8, 2018, where the scorecards were displayed by the authorities online for all the registered test takers. As new to the trend this year, the top 20 students who made it to either IIM Ahmadabad or IIM Bangalore, had 2 female candidates and 3 male candidates who are from the non-engineering background.
As per the past year trends, only students from engineering background made it to the top 20 candidates. CAT 2015 & CAT 2014 data reflects that there were only 17 & 16 candidates respectively with 100 percentile. It was new to the eyes of even IIM Lucknow that students of non-engineering background could make it to the list of IIM Ahmadabad and Bangalore.
Following the queue, students are now early waiting for the cut off list for PI & GD round which will be announced by IIM Calcutta. Read CAT Selection Procedure
The main reason for failure in the case was the difference in the QA, VI and DI sectional score. It was found that students performed well in only 2 of the sections and not all three. Thus, it is a lesson for the CAT 2018 test takers to perform well in all the 3 sections and not just 2 sections as now IIM is taking this into notice.
Even after securing a good 99 percentile and scoring high marks in 2 out of 3 sections in CAT 2017, the major reason for losing a position in the cut off list of IIM A & B was the section in which the score went low.
It was observed that some candidates did not perform well in the DILR section and others in VARC and some others from humanities or arts background failed to perform well in QA section. Although the percentile still came to be around 99, if the candidate would have scored around 85 percent score in each of the section then the selection would have been done by the top-notch IIM Ahmadabad or IIM Bangalore.

Both IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore are aware of the fact that students aspire to study in these reputed institutes. But this year neither of them wished to give any consoling messages to the students on missing their goals. Rather there were clear messages written stating that you have not been shortlisted.
On the website of IIM Ahmadabad, no reasons were given for the failure of making it up to the list. The following message could be viewed in case your name was not on their list:
IIM Bangalore, however, took the pain of stating to all candidates who secured 99 percentile, the probable reason for not making it to the cut off list:
Here is a list of students who lost marks in the various sections leading to loss of selection in the IIM A or IIM B:
|Name||Overall percentile||Section -1 VARC||Section- 2 DILR||Section -3 Quant|
From this year, there has been a change because of the dips in the sectional score that will create all the difference. Also, this year IIM Ahmadabad has given more weight to academic profile. This weightage given to academic profile is made to ensure diversity in the campus and making sure that the candidate is skilled equally for all the problems related to thinking, communication or calculation.
The minimum percentile required is 70 percentile in each of the 3 sections and minimum 80 percentile overall for admission into the PGP course 2018-2020. If a candidate has failed on the sectional score criteria then the selection could not be done.
As per the directives were given prior to selection it was stated by IIM A that “Performance in CAT is an important input in the admission process. Candidates should note that it is important to perform well in each section of the test.”
Thus, IIM Ahmadabad did not declare any apology or consoling messages to the candidates who could not make it to the top selected candidates list.
The minimum overall cut off score declared by IIM Bangalore for the 1st stage of selection for the PGP 2018-20 course is 90 and the sectional score or cut off comes to be around 85 in VARC and 80 in DILR and Quant section. While all other IIMs have not declared such specific cut off for each of the section, IIM Bangalore has chosen to be specific.
Apart from this, IIM Banglore gives only 40% weightage to CAT and 60% to other parameters which are considered important from the viewpoint of the selection process.
Other important parameters are academic profile, academic diversity, gender diversity and work experience. The 60% share is divided equally among these parameters so again student must have performed well since class 10 onwards and then all the choices he/she made in life are given weightage.
Even though if you have failed to make it to the top IIMs like IIM Ahmadabad and IIM Bangalore, don’t worry as other IIMs are also there with an equally good reputation in the field of education and placement. Also, there are plenty of B Schools which consider your CAT score for education and placement.
