IIM Bangalore Admission (PGP 2018-20): 40% given to CAT 2017 Result

Last Updated - December 13, 2017

As most of the IIMs are trying to change their admission policy, IIM Bangalore has joined the league too. Going by IIM Banglore Admission Policy for PGP 2018-20, it has decided to give 40% weightage to CAT Result, while 60% is given to other selection factors. This policy is applicable only for shortlisting for GD/PI rounds.

This move by IIM Bangalore will enable candidates get admission at a low CAT Cutoff, unlike IIM Ahmedabad, that has announced a higher cutoff for shortlisting. Candidates will be judged majorly on their academic record, instead of CAT Score. Check  CAT Rank Predictor

This 40% weightage will be divided amongst all the three sections of CAT Exam:

  1. Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC) - 14 points
  2. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 16 points
  3. Quantitative Aptitude (QA) - 10 points

Impact of CAT Score Getting Less Weightage

  • Firstly, it will have a huge impact on the candidates belonging to non-engineering field. It will become easier for them to make it to the Ace Institute.
  • Also, by introducing this policy it will also enhance the learning atmosphere on the campus. It will be a great learning experience for all the candidates as well as for the campus as a whole.
  • Another reason for this is, as MBA is all about having a broad knowledge of various industries and to have proper awareness of the working environment, hence the students from different educational backgrounds can come together and have a healthy discussion on some topic. This will help all the students to know about other student’s perspective of interpreting things.

Other Selection Factors

IIM Bangalore has taken the lead among other IIMs by awarding 60% weightage to other factors. Mentioned below is the detailed information about what all will come under the ‘Other Factors’ category:

Academic profile: 60% weightage

According to IIM Bangalore admission policy for PGP 2018-20, all candidates are shortlisted on the percentage scores in the 10th and 12th board exams that will be initially adjusted by dividing each score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. Candidates are informed that the database of 10th and 12th scores of all CAT applicants of the past two years will be used for identifying the 90th percentile score for each 10th and 12th board for this purpose.

20% weight to Bachelor’s degree

You will be awarded another 20% by IIM Bangalore if your performance in Bachelor’s Degree is/was outstanding. According to IIMB admission policy ‘For all candidates in the first shortlist, final scores obtained by the candidate are used for the bachelors’ degree and professional degrees (if any). Incomplete or intermediate scores are considered only if the candidate's final score is pending. Thus, for final year bachelor’s degree candidates, their incomplete graduation score would be taken in lieu of final graduation score. Graduation scores are adjusted within their respective disciplines. This gives the adjusted score for the bachelor’s degree for all candidates in the first shortlist.’

8% Weight to Work experience

If your work experience is around 36 months or greater period then you will be awarded the highest weightage of 8% in IIM Bangalore 1st stage shortlist for PGP 2017-19 admission process. We inform you that the work experience will be accounted upto July 2016 as stated by IIM Bangalore admission policy.

The B-school has clarified that the score will peak at 36 months work experience and will remain at that level for candidates with work experience exceeding 36 months. The work experience score (maximum 8 in the pre- PI stage) will be multiplied by the quality of work experience score on a 5 point scale (0.25 - 0.5 – 1 - 1.5 - 2) as given by interviewers in the PI process in Phase 2 to then arrive at a weighted work experience score.”

Shortlisting Policy of IIMs

Mentioned below are the changes opted by some of the other top IIMs:

IIM Ahmedabad recently adopted the policy by the name of ‘Academic Diversity’ that will prove to be a boon for the candidates coming from non-engineering background. Also, it will give 70% weightage to CAT 2016 scores and 30% score to academic profile for 1st stage shortlisting.

IIM Calcutta has announced to award 56% weight to CAT 2016 scores; 40% to academics upto class 12 and 4% to gender diversity in the 1st stage shortlisting criteria for admission to PGP 2017-19.

IIM Lucknow will award 60% weight to CAT 2016 scores; 20% and 5% weight to academic excellence and academic diversity respectively; 10% weight to work experience and 5% to gender diversity.

All the IIMs are trying to enhance their quality of education as well as the status and atmosphere of their campus. Therefore, the IIMs are introducing some changes in their Admission Policies with time to see how they can improve themselves as an education system.
