CAT is generally convened by anyone of the old generation IIMs. It should be kept in mind that the exam is conducted by Tata Consultancy Services in online mode and convened by any respective IIM. Past year trends reveal that mainly six IIMs: Lucknow, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Indore, Kozhikode and Kolkata have been convening the exam. IIM Indore is most likely to conduct the exam this year. Check below on the past trends on CAT conducting body:
|Year of Examination||Conducting IIM|
|2020||IIM Indore (officially announced)|
Although CAT is conducted each year in the last week of November, in 2016 IIM Bangalore decided to schedule the exam for December 4. This shows that there is no fixed date for the exam. As per previous years’ trends, CAT 2020 Application forms are expected to be out by August 08, 2020. All exam related events and their dates are mentioned below in a tabulated format -

The exam is conducted in two sessions and CAT exam pattern changes every year in terms of difficulty level and question distribution variation. The first two sections of CAT include - Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation followed by Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning section. For every correct answer, 3 marks are awarded and a mark is deducted for each incorrect one. Candidates are advised to skip a few answers instead of providing incorrect answers as there will be no negative marking for unanswered questions.
|Exam Duration and Slot||Slot 1: 9 am to 12p, Slot 2: 2pm to 5 pm|
|Number of Sections||3|
|Exam Duration||180 Minutes, 60 minutes for each section|
|Medium of Exam||English Only|
|Total Questions||100 (VARC-34, DILR-32, QA-34)|
|Type of Questions||MCQs and Non MCQs|
|Total Marks Allotted||300|
The Quantitative Ability and Verbal & Reading Comprehension sections comprise 34 questions each, whereas the Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section includes 32 questions in total. This distribution of questions has been the same since CAT 2015. Moreover, candidates can review their answers for a section during the time provided for reviewing answers as they cannot access it once the section is completed. Candidates will always hear some guff about one session being far tougher or far easier than the other(s) and therefore better/worse for candidates. There is not much basis to support this analysis.
