Changes in CAT Over the years

Changes in CAT Over the Years

    • In 2009, CAT applicants faced the biggest change in the exam when CAT was turned from paper-based to computer-based test. Earlier it was organized by a US-based company named ‘Prometric’, but after the virus attack which caused the server to slow down, the 2009 session was conducted in a pen and paper mode only. The exam is currently being conducted by Tata Consultancy Services, since 2014
    • The exam duration was changed from 140 minutes to 170 minutes in 2009, and later to 180 minutes
    • CAT introduced on-screen calculator and non-MCQ type questions in 2015
    • Changes in the number of questions - In 2014, CAT comprised 50 questions in each section. Prior to this distribution of questions, the exam consisted of 60 questions in total with 30 questions incorporated in each section.
    • The registration fee was increased from INR 1800 to INR 1900 and INR 900 to INR 950 for General and SC/ST/PwD candidates respectively
    • New modes of fee payment such as PayU, BillDesk and PayTM were added in CAT from 2018
    • JNU was added to the list of CAT score accepting institutes for admission into MBA programme offered by School of Management and Entrepreneurship

    CAT Exam Pattern

The exam is conducted in two sessions and CAT exam pattern changes every year in terms of difficulty level and question distribution variation. The first two sections of CAT include - Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation followed by Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning section. For every correct answer, 3 marks are awarded and a mark is deducted for each incorrect one. Candidates are advised to skip a few answers instead of providing incorrect answers as there will be no negative marking for unanswered questions.

Check Detailed syllabus for CAT 2020

The Quantitative Ability and Verbal & Reading Comprehension sections comprise 34 questions each, whereas the Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section includes 32 questions in total. This distribution of questions has been the same since CAT 2015. Moreover, candidates can review their answers for a section during the time provided for reviewing answers as they cannot access it once the section is completed. Candidates will always hear some guff about one session being far tougher or far easier than the other(s) and therefore better/worse for candidates. There is not much basis to support this analysis.
