Ketan has shared his preparation strategies for the MAT exam along with the routines and some other basic tricks which could help other MBA aspirants in clearing MAT exam.

Was this his first attempt at MAT?

This was his 1st attempt of MAT exam. He was working with his father, which drew him towards the corporate world and management domain. He joined Bullseye institute for preparation and cleared the exam in his first attempt.

What was his preparation strategy for MAT 2019?

The first thing which Ketan and other toppers emphasize is clearing basics. When there is clarity about topics it is much easier to gain speed and accuracy while attempting the questions.

Mock Tests and Previous year’s papers help but only when you got your basics covered. Because in competitive exams, a single type of question can be asked in multiple forms. Only those candidates who have the basic concept clarity can understand the twisted form of the question.

Coaching Vs Self study? What helped him more?

Ketan preferred self-study over coaching for the MAT exam. Although joining a coaching center could be an added plus in your preparation, he says.

I took coaching from Bullseye and I referred to the course material and online test series provided by them only. I felt no need to go for other books as the course material given by them was more than enough. More than the textbooks I concentrated on the mock tests.

Coaching centers help you with short cut-tricks, essential in managing time. Mock test series of some particular coaching centers have been vital in shaping the performance of students, giving them an edge over students preparing by themselves.

To what extent did he find Mock Tests and Previous Years’ Question Papers useful?

Ketan attempted multiple Mock Tests. But attempting Mock Tests isn’t enough. It’s important to analyze the mock tests as well. Writing mock tests will ultimately boost your speed and analyzing it will allow you to understand your weak areas. With that, you can convert your weak areas into your strengths. For instance, Ankit focussed on the Grammar portion. After 1-2 attempts, it was evident that this is the area he needed to work on. He read Business Magazines, Newspapers and solve reading comprehension too.

Any particular strategy that he followed on the exam day?

There wasn’t a particular strategy for the exam day. One key thing which Ketan emphasized upon was choosing the paper-based mode(PBT) over computer-based test (CBT). In the PBT MAT exam you can see all the questions at once, which helps in managing time in the longer run. Marking the answers on an OMR sheet is easier and faster than marking the answers using a mouse.

Apart from that you just need to relax. It’s important for prioritizing questions wisely. People usually mess up things in a state of panic. First, attempt the questions you are more confident about. Then deal with the rest of the lot. Don’t over attempt considering there’s negative marking in the MAT exam, especially questions you are not confident about.
