Language Skills Section in NMAT 2017

NMAT is a national level entrance exam conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) for admissions in various B-Schools across the country. The National Management Aptitude Test is conducted in the online mode where candidates are required to answer 120 MCQ type questions within a span of 2 hours.

  • Out of all its sections, Language Skill plays a crucial part in the exam. It comprises of 32 questions (out of 120) in NMAT. Thus, the section carries a potential of deciding your fate in the exam.
  • The basic idea of the language skill section is to test the candidate’s skills in various aspects of English language and Grammar.

NMAT 2017 Exam Pattern

  • NMAT is a Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • The exam comprises of four sections and a total of 120 questions.
  • All questions must be answered in a total of 120 minutes.
  • Each question carries Three marks and there is no negative marking applicable in the NMAT exam.
  • Each section has a separate time frame allotted for it and it has to be attempted in that duration only.

  • The Language skills section of the exam tests the candidate’s basic knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, reading, and verbal ability.
  • Since the exam is aimed at admitting candidates for managerial courses it expects them to have knowledge of English as expected from a University UG student.

NMAT Preparation tips for Language Skills

The syllabus of Language skills section is designed to test the basic knowledge of candidate in the language (as per the requirements for studying a master level business administration course). The section can prove to be a score booster if studied with a proper plan. Following tips can be incorporated while studying for Language skills section.

  • Study smartly rather than going for extensive hard work. Try to incorporate techniques like e-notes preparation, studying from electronic material, solving test questions etc.

  • Read newspaper for tackling the comprehension and vocabulary part.
  • Study for short duration and then take rest rather than sitting for long hours at stretch.

Analyzing the trends in past year papers, it was observed that the type of questions asked in the Language skill section are divided into four parts namely Reading and Comprehension, Vocabulary, verbal ability and basic grammar.

Basic Grammar- Questions asked under this section are from topics like Tenses, adjective, preposition etc.

Vocabulary- The vocabulary section would focus on areas like idioms, phrases, corrections etc.

Verbal ability- This portion is pretty much similar to the vocabulary section. The difference is just that you are required to apply your cognitive skills to deduce a correct pattern or order out of random sequences.

Reading and Comprehension- As the name suggests the section tests the candidates for their reading and comprehending skills.

Qualifying Marks for Language Skills

  • NMAT Cut off is divided into two parts viz.  sectional and overall cut-off.
  • Candidates have to clear both the cut-offs in order to clear the exam.
  • Apart from that there are separate cut-offs for each college which are decided on the basis of availability of seats, number of application received and difficulty of the paper.
