NMAT 2017: Helpful NMAT Preparation Tips and Strategies

Last Updated - November 22, 2016

Narsee Monjee Management Aptitude Test (NMAT), conducted by GMAC every year, is considered as the leading exam for admissions to the best B-schools of the country. The exam started as a pen and paper exam, but now has graduated to a computer based test (CBT). NMAT is seen to be a little easier than CAT.

It is a speed based test with moderate questions with less time per question to solve. It can be taken three times a year and the best of the three results will be considered for admission. NMAT for the academic session 2017-19 will be conducted in a testing window from Oct 7, 2016 to Dec 20, 2016. For queries about NMAT Results and NMAT Syllabus, candidates can visit the official website of the University.

Candidates must be familiar with the pattern of the exam and how to tackle each section of the exam. Candidates can find some NMAT preparation tips as to how to split their exam according to the given time frame below.

NMAT Exam Pattern

NMAT is a computer-generated test which gives each candidate a randomly generated series of questions which are chosen from a large question bank. The number of questions, difficulty level, and the time limit for each set is predetermined and fixed.

There are three sections to the exam: Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning. Each section is allotted a specific time before which that section has to be finished. There is no negative marking to encourage calculative and logical risks, also the candidates can decide the order in which they want to attempt the sections. The NMAT Exam Pattern is given in the below table:

SectionsNo. of QuestionsAllotted TimeCut-off
Language Skills3222 minutes55
Quantitative Skills4860 minutes61
Logical Reasoning4038 minutes74
Total120120 minutes208 (tentative)

Each correct answer is awarded 3 marks. As there is no negative marking, candidates are advised to attempt each and every question. The exam will have MCQs with five options for each question.

General Tips for NMAT Preparation

Other than the sectional preparation tips, candidates must refer to some basic tips listed below. They will foster your understanding and help you score better in NMAT 2017.

  • To further improve their preparation, candidates can split the paper into two parts: concept driven and practice intensive.
  • Quantitative Skills and a part of Language Skills can be considered as concept driven. This means that these sections require candidates to build their basic concepts and learn to apply them. This can be done by graduating to practicing once the basic concepts are understood.
  • Logical Reasoning can be considered to be purely practice intensive. This means that the only way to be better in this section is to practice a vast range of questions to get familiar with reasoning.
  • The exam has less difficulty than CAT exam, but the preparation methods are more or less the same.
  • Candidates must keep the time limit in mind. Spending too much time on one question can mean getting less time for rest of the questions where the candidate could have scored more.
  • This is not a neuron intensive paper and since the section selection, skimming questions etc. elements still prevail, time management is by far the most important of all the elements.
  • Verbal Ability questions generally include Reading Comprehension, Fill in the blanks, Direct Vocabulary and Para Jumbles in effectively the same number.
