Last Updated - September 02, 2016

Montu G. Limbani appeared for BITSAT in 2014. He took admission in DAIICT through BITSAT though many other colleges also offered him admission. He believes in self-study. During his preparation for JEE, he says he had prepared himself a lot for BITSAT. Following is the questionnaire with Montu G. Limbani.

Ques. Name of the Institutes that offered you Admission?

Ans.NIRMA, SVIT, All other collages of Gujarat

Ques. Did you take coaching classes? Mention their role in your Story (At least 70 words)

Ans. NO I did not take coaching classes for BITSAT examination but I took coaching classes for JEE-advanced keeping in mind that classes would help in BITSAT examination as well so I took the classes in Ahmedabad but I think that classes didn't help me anymore because if you are able to do things by yourself than no more things are much greater than you.

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Coaching ClassesNCERT Text BooksCoaching Study MaterialOnline Study MaterialSubject Wise ClassesSelf Study

Ques. Role of Coaching Institutes in Cracking BITSAT.

Ans. 4

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. My strong areas are Mathematics and Chemistry and my weak area is Physics. As I said that my strong area are mathematics and physics so that I had put myself in practicing more about that area. I used to give equal time for Maths and Chemistry and remaining time I spent for physics in that time I solved many problems from different kinds of books so that they would help me in examination and I also used to spend my holidays and weekends in this preparation.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. The key to crack BITSAT is practice – this is your first online exam and you have to be well adjusted to the format for acing the exam. A few websites offer online BITSAT test series and if you are preparing seriously for BITSAT, you should try taking some of them. This will ensure that you are well versed with the type of questions and the way to solve them. In addition, a few books for BITSAT are also available, but they are not of much use if you already know the JEE concepts well. Talking about the main test itself, BITSAT has a section called English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning which is not included in the other entrance exams. You don’t have to worry about this section at all if you have given competitive examinations in school where Logical Reasoning questions are asked. In addition, English Proficiency is quite an easy section and you don’t need to specifically prepare for it – just keep your cool and answer accurately. That said, you should seriously consider joining BITS Pilani if you get a good enough score. After the top 5 IITs, it is probably the next best option. From personal experience too, I’ve learned a great deal from BITS and it has helped me develop my personality and taught me a lot of invaluable things.

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 3 months before the exam?

Ans.1.Create a study calendar.
Start exactly one month before the exams are scheduled to start. For each day write down the subject that you plan to spend time studying. If you are sitting more than one exam, take into account which exams require more in depth knowledge; these should show up on your study calendar more frequently. Stick to the calendar, an hour a day might not seem like much but it will really be useful. In designing your study calendar, try not to study for too long on something you find difficult, you will become stressed and most likely forget what you learnt an hour ago.
2. Figure out your study methods.
Study methods include using colors, pictures and brainstorm or mind map pages. Some people learn and remember things better if they’re in certain colors whereas other people may remember diagrams and pictures more easily. Use the method that works for you; as long as it’s effective. It’s no use reading lots of text if your study method is diagrams. Remember, everyone has different methods to study, what works for your best friend may not work for you. For me personally I employ the use of mind maps as well as reading text. I enjoy the mind map method as it clearly shows the links between various topics within the exam. As such, I create a holistic picture of the exam which allows me to understand what’s involved.
3. Understand the syllabus.
It’s not enough to simply memorize the material that you have covered in lectures as there is the possibility that exam questions will not be asked in a straightforward manner and your brain may be too saturated from all the information you memorize. As such, it’s important to understand the material so that you can answer the question no matter which angle the examiner asks the question from. Also, understanding the material helps you to establish links between topics within the exam. Therefore, both studying and answering questions will be much easier, as the volume you memorize would be less.
4. Take breaks.
After studying for a while, reward yourself by going on a walk to clear your mind or chatting with friends. Try not to feel guilty about this – you need some time to have fun and it’s better to revise when you are feeling relaxed after a break than to exhaust yourself studying all day. This is true in my case as I have realized that the brain can only take so much, therefore it makes no sense studying all day long. As such, after a break, when you resume studying, your mind is more likely to absorb more as it is fresh.
5. Keep a healthy diet throughout.
Studying for exams (especially close to the exam date) can sometimes cause us to neglect our nutrition as we try to maximize our study time. However, it is quite important to maintain a healthy lifestyle as this keeps the brain healthy which would result in more effective studying. Keeping a healthy diet should not be complex, as it could just entail a simple walk or jog for 20-30 minutes and having proper meals daily.

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Book Followed

Ans. You should have a fair understanding of Kinematics and Dynamics and it is essential to be able to build a strong problem solving ability. Also, the Theory of Fields (Electromagnetism) is very important. In addition to Mechanics and Electrodynamics; enough time must be allotted to Heat and Thermodynamics, Optics and Modern Physics. These topics are generally the most neglected topics which then can prove to be risk factors. But they are the easiest and scoring topics and share a good percentage of total marks of the exam.

  • University Physics by Freedman and Young
  • Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick and Walker
  • [practice] Physics for IIT-JEE series by B. M. Sharma.

I was taught Physics by the author. I have not gone through these books but I am basing this recommendation on the assumption that these would be similar to the questions found in the reading material provided to me as a student.

  • [practice] Concepts of Physics by H. C. Verma
  • [practice] Problems in General Physics by I. E. Irodov

This is generally of a level above the general questions asked currently in IIT-JEE and may be considered optional. The books mentioned above can be used for all topics.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed

Ans. Physical Chemistry can fetch you real good scores and hence all the units in it must be done carefully. Students tend to neglect Inorganic Chemistry but just a proper understanding of it can prove beneficial.
Enough time should be devoted to general principles of Organic Chemistry, as this will make the remaining part easy to comprehend. Physical Chemistry is important as numerical problems asked from this section are scoring and not too difficult. Pay special attention to learn Inorganic Chemistry as there are many facts and figures to be remembered. One can learn this topic by continuous revision.

  • University Chemistry by Bruce Mahan for Physical Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd for Organic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry by Solomons and Fryhle for Organic Chemistry
  • A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry by Peter Sykes for Organic Chemistry.
  • This book must be read irrespective of whether you read 2 or 3. But it is suggested that you read this book only after you have covered all or at least a large part of your organic chemistry syllabus.
  • Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J. D. Lee for Inorganic Chemistry
  • [practice] Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations by RC Mukherjee

Ques. English: Steps to master this section and the books you followed.

Ans. Take a course to improve your basic knowledge of English. Without a strong basic foundation in the language, it would be a Pyrrhic victory to go ahead. So, learn the basics from a person who is well versed in English for some time, so that you will reap the benefits in the future. If you hesitate to take initiatives, your future will not take you to any higher places either in English learning or anywhere else in your life. Having a strong foundation is the secret of success in any field. The more you go upwards, the more you will realize the significance of basic knowledge. So, take all steps to learn the basics. You can choose children's books which have fairly easy vocabulary and sentence construction. Reading such stories should give you a better understanding of the words. This way, you can improve your vocabulary. Write in a notebook (your personal dictionary) the new words that you learn each day.
Go through this dictionary once in a week so that don't forget the meaning of these words. Improve your vocabulary. By using more complex and advanced words, you are prone to perfect your English. Every time you go through your personal dictionary, visualize the meaning of the words you wrote. For example: For the word hallucination, you should imagine what the word actually means. This visualization method will make you understand the small difference between similar words such as consent and permission. Never hesitate to read aloud. The worst thing that could happen to you is to be corrected. And, think of it, it's not bad. By being corrected, you have a pointer on where to improve your pronunciation or accent.

Ques. Logical Reasoning: Strategy and Books you Followed.

Ans. Any book or reference material that students use should help him/her develop basic concepts, tips, tricks and strategies. A reference material should give the student sufficient practice on problems with varying difficulty level. A reference material can be considered a credible guide only if concepts are lucidly explained in the most efficient way to solve the problems.

Ques. Mathematics: Strategy and Books Followed.

Ans. Calculus forms a base for almost every part of Mathematics. Other important and scoring topics are Determinants, Sequences, Permutation and Combination. The student must be able to relate the complex numbers with Coordinate Geometry and Vectors. Three dimensional geometry should be practised to get that additional or compensating score. One must be able to understand inter-relationship between various topics so as to know their importance. The knowledge and skills developed by understanding and preparing the chapter Coordinate Geometry, can be used to solve problems in complex numbers. The knowledge of Vectors is also very helpful in these topics. To solve problems of Probability, the student must be strong in Permutation and Combinations. Formula and problem-solving skills developed by thorough practice of Trigonometry are useful in almost all topics. Finally, there is no denying the fact that the most important tool that a mathematician has, is Calculus. I cannot stress this enough -- studying theory in maths is as important as in physics and chemistry. Maths is not only about solving some equations or some problems but also about understanding how theorems were arrived at and the intuition behind several conventions and ideas. So it is very important that you study the theory given in NCERTs and other books that precedes the examples and questions.  This would give you a better understanding of the concepts and certainly help you in JEE.
