Chitranjan Singh appeared for BITSAT 2014. He took the admission in IIT BHU Varanasi. In this interview, he shares some ideas as well as preparation tips. He used to solve model test papers every single day. He always followed his class schedule but also never forgot to contribute properly on his self-study. Following is the questionnaire with Chitranjan.

Ques. Name of the Institute where you took Admission?

Ans. IIT BHU Varanasi

Ques. Name of the Institutes that offered you Admission?

Ans. VIT Vellore, Thapar University, IIT BHU Varanasi.

Ques. Did you take coaching classes? Mention their role in your Story.

Ans. Yes I joined Bansal Coaching classes, Jaipur. They played an important role for me since they provide me that atmosphere which is necessary for the preparation of BITSAT. Their study material and most importantly their guidance which was very crucial and beneficial for me. Their continuous test series made my mind always sound and encouraged me to do better and made me improve my performance.

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Coaching ClassesNCERT Text BooksCoaching Study MaterialOnline Study MaterialSubject Wise ClassesSelf Study

Ques. Role of Coaching Institutes in Cracking BITSAT.

Ans. 9

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. Accuracy in a long paper like BITSAT was weak area for me. Solving so many questions online in just 3 hours seemed to be very difficult for me. But to improve my accuracy, I went to my coaching teacher Mr. Kshitij Sharma. He gave me a software which contains 10 model BITSAT papers and told me to solve one paper daily within three hours. Those 10 day practice increased my speed very much. Solving inorganic and organic chemistry very fast was my strong area. To maintain this I always used to solve my coaching study material for inorganic chemistry and Paula Bruce book for organic chemistry.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. I had done many mock papers during my preparation for BITSAT. I used to solve one model paper daily for 10 days on my PC in a software and then did my assessment by the score. Besides this, I also used to solve model papers given by coaching classes since there were no specific test series for BITSAT.

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 3 months before the exam?

Ans. Most important tip is to improve your English since it is the part that coaching teachers don't focus on. So it’s better that you start improving your grammar and vocabulary 3 months before the exam. Also try to improve your accuracy in these 3 months by solving as many model papers you can. Also, do take the mock test on regular basis and assess yourself. Also focus on inorganic and organic chemistry more in these three months and try to solve their question as fast as you can as it can save a lot of time in a long paper like BITSAT. Also do not panic, doesn't matter if your score is very low in some of the mock tests, just work hard.

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Book Followed

Ans. Since BITSAT tests your basics, so it is very important to focus on basics of physics. Thus the most basic book for physics in HC Verma. So one should go through that book thoroughly and solve as many questions from it (especially short answer questions). Also improve Kinematics and current-electricity portion since it has very high weightage in BITSAT. Also be perfect in modern physics, since it is the easiest topic in physics but at the same time scoring too. It is also advised to go through NCERT physics books also since they are also very basic book for physics and thus, very helpful.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed

Ans. Since chemistry is a portion in BITSAT that needed to be solved very fast with high accuracy, so speed is the key in chemistry. Main strategy is to make your organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry very good to save your time. For organic chemistry, refer book by Paula Bruce and solve single correct questions and for inorganic chemistry, refer NCERT which is very basic book and contain sufficient amount of knowledge which one need to know for BITSAT. Also don't give more time to physical chemistry questions. If you think that you can solve it easily then only do it otherwise skip it since they are sometimes time consuming.

Ques. English: Steps to master this section and the books you followed.

Ans. This is a scoring section in this tough paper and also it doesn't require much time. So to score, one must be very good in grammar and vocabulary. There is no specific book needed for this. One can go through any English grammar and vocabulary book. Also practice some unseen passages one week before exam. It will be very helpful.

Ques. Logical Reasoning: Strategy and Books you Followed.

Ans. Logical reasoning is something that isn’t taught in coaching classes or in schools, so one has to prepare for it by himself/herself. You don't require any specific book for it. You are advised to just go through the reasoning section of model papers and solve 10 to 15 questions daily three months before the exam. Also try to do this section very quickly with accuracy and don't waste time on questions which are taking more than 2 minutes and rather skip them.

Ques. Mathematics: Strategy and Books Followed.

Ans. It is a very tricky section in BITSAT. It contains some very easy questions and some difficult and time consuming questions. So first try to solve those easy questions then move on to these hard questions and skip every time consuming question if you want and give that time to some other section and then at last come to those questions if you have time left. For preparation, solve miscellaneous exercise of each chapter from NCERT book and solve model papers by above strategy and try to improve accuracy. Also go through coaching notes and basic class examples without going through any specific book.

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. I would like to improve my physics more if I have a chance to go back in time. Also I would like to sleep more to improve my concentration and also would like to ask some more doubts in physics and mathematics for better understanding. I also would like to solve those daily practise sheets given by coaching classes those i unable to do.
