AILET 2019 Exam Pattern

AILET 2019 is conducted by National Law University (NLU), Delhi every year. Candidates seeking admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in NLU Delhi have to appear for this law entrance exam. The exam is conducted in the offline mode.

Separate exams are conducted for each of the three programs. The questions are objective in nature and the exam duration for the three programs is different and the same has been mentioned below in the article. There is no prescribed syllabus for AILET but is similar to CLAT.

Aspirants take the exam to get one of the 80 seats in the B.A LL.B program, 20 seats in LLM and 10 seats for PhD. This article covers important points about AILET 2019 Exam Pattern for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs.


AILET 2019 Exam Pattern for B.A LL.B

B.A LL.B (Hons.) is a five year academic program. To gain admission to this program at NLU, Delhi aspirants have to appear for AILET 2019. AILET 2019 exam is divided into five sections, which are as follows:

  • General knowledge (Current Affairs, History, Civics, General Science, Economics, History)
  • English including comprehension
  • Legal Aptitude
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Elementary Mathematics

Details of AILET 2019 Exam Pattern: LLB

Exam Mode

  • The law entrance exam for undergraduates is conducted in the offline mode, traditional paper and pen exam.
  • Each candidate appearing for the exam will be given an OMR sheet where answers need to be filled up.
  • Aspirants are required to use an HB pencil on the OMR sheet.

Types of Questions

  • Objective type or multiple choice type questions will be asked for the law entrance exam.
  • Each question has four answer choices.
  • Candidates have to mark the most apt answer.

Time Duration

  • Candidates will be given 1 hour and 30 minutes (90 minutes) for the test.
  • Aspirants are advised to complete the exam within the stipulated time since requests for extra time will not be entertained.

AILET 2019 Marking Scheme

  • Each question in the exam carries 1 mark each.
  • Candidates will be awarded 1 mark for each correct answer and a penalty of 0.25 for each wrong answer.
  • There is no negative marking for unanswered questions.

In case, a candidate marks two answers it will be treated as a wrong answer and there’ll be a penalty of 0.25 marks


AILET 2019 Exam Pattern for LL.M

Candidates with an LL.B degree can or an equivalent law degree can appear for the postgraduate exam. LL.M program is a one year course. AILET 2019 exam pattern is divided into different sections, which are as follows:

  • Legal theory
  • Criminal law
  • Law of contracts
  • Law of torts
  • Constitutional law

Additionally, candidates are required to write an essay on given topic.

  • The law entrance exam for postgraduates is conducted in the offline mode, traditional paper and pen exam.

Marks Distribution

  • The AILET 2019 exam pattern consists of two parts: objective type questions and a descriptive type question.
  • The objective type questions for include 100 questions covering: legal theory, criminal law, law of contracts, law of torts and constitutional law.
  • Candidates also have to write an essay for 50 marks on a given topic.

Type of Questions

  • The objective type questions or multiple choice questions have four answer choices each.
  • Candidates have to mark the most apt answer.
  • There will be a descriptive type question as well.

Time Duration

  • The total duration of the AILET 2019 exam is 1 hour and 30 minutes (90 minutes).
  • Aspirants are requested to complete the exam within the stipulated time since requests for extra time will not be entertained.

AILET 2019 Exam Pattern for PhD

The PhD program offered at NLU, Delhi is minimum 2 years and a maximum of 3 years. AILET 2019 exam pattern for PhD comprises of two papers, which are as follows:

  • Paper 1: Research Methodology
  • Paper 2: Research Proposal on Specific Paper

About PhD Paper 1

  • Candidates appearing for the PhD law entrance exam will have to answer 100 objective type questions. The paper carries 100 marks and the exam duration is 1 hour and 30 minutes (90 minutes). As per the marking scheme, 1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer.

About PhD Paper 2

Aspirants have to submit a 15 page research proposal. The proposal can be on the research topic. It will carry 100 marks. The research proposal should contain the following items:

  • Title
  • Problem statement and background information on the subject
  • Research questions, hypothesis and methodology
  • Research design
