NATA 2018 Syllabus, Important Topics and Sample Papers

NATA Syllabus 2018 is defined by CoA (Council of Architecture). For the academic session 2018-19, the exam is scheduled for April 16, 2018 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is conducted in 2 tiers namely- Paper 1 and Paper 2.

  • Paper 1 - General Aptitude and Mathematics
  • Paper 2 - Drawing Test

The syllabus of NATA will contain topics from Mathematics, General Aptitude and Drawing. It is imperative for aspirants to go through the entire syllabus of NATA 2018 which helps them to plan the preparation schedule in a precise manner. It also helps them not to get confused over what to study and what not to. NATA 2018 Sample Papers

It is expected that the difficulty level of the questions will be of moderate level. There will be a total of 62 questions. NATA 2018 will be conducted in offline mode. The duration of exam is 3-hour i.e. test takers need to take Mathematics and General Aptitude in the first 90 minutes, while the last 90 minutes are allotted to take drawing section. NATA is a national level architecture entrance exam conducted by COA (Council of Architecture). Through this exam, candidates are granted admissions to B. Arch. Program in various reputed institutions across India. Admissions are based on NATA Scores.

NATA Exam Pattern for General Aptitude and Mathematics Test

This is the first paper that a candidate needs to attempt. Through this exam, a candidate’s aptitude and mental ability is tested. In the mathematics section, the questions will be asked from class 10th and 12th class. One must make sure to brush up all the formulas and concepts of Mathematics. The important highlights of paper 1 in NATA 2018 are mentioned below:

  • It is carried out in offline mode with objective type questions
  • The duration of the test is 90 minutes divided among the total questions
  • A total of 60 questions with variable difficulty levels is put up in the NATA Question papers
  • Total marks of the test are 120 Marks.
  • There is no provision of negative marking

NATA Syllabus 2018 for General Aptitude and Mathematics Test

NATA Syllabus for General Aptitude

There is no well-defined syllabus for Paper 1. For NATA 2018, this test will be conducted in offline mode. The marks will be awarded in case candidate has answered the question preceding the present question correctly. General Aptitude test measures perception, imagination and observation, creativity and communication along with architectural awareness. Given below is the criteria on which the candidates will be tested:

  • Visualizing three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings.
  • Visualizing different sides of three-dimensional objects.
  • Un identifying commonly used materials and objects based on their textural qualities.
  • Analytical reasoning.
  • Mental Ability.
  • Imaginative comprehension and expression.
  • Architectural awareness.

NATA Syllabus for Mathematics 

This is a sub-part of Paper 1.  It will test a candidate’s level of understanding in Mathematics Subject. Given below is a detailed information of NATA Mathematics Syllabus:


  • Definitions of A.P. and G.P.
  • Arithmetic/ Geometric series
  • A.M. and G.M. and their relation
  • Infinite G.P. series and its sum
  • Summation of first n-terms of series ∑n, ∑n²,∑n3


  • Definition;
  • General properties;
  • Change of base.

Complex Numbers

  • Definition and properties of Complex Numbers
  • Complex conjugate
  • Triangle inequality 
  • Square root of complex numbers
  • Cube roots of unity

Quadratic Equations

  • Quadratic Equations with real coefficients
  • Relations between roots and coefficients;
  • Sign and magnitude of the quadratic expression ax2 +bx+c (where a, b, c are rational numbers and a ≠ 0)
  • Nature of roots
  • Formation of a quadratic equation

Binomial theorem (positive integral index)

  • Statement of the theorem
  • General term, middle term, equidistant term
  • Properties of binomial coefficient


  • : Concepts of m x n (m ≤ 3, n ≤ 3) real matrices
  • Operations of addition
  • Scalar Multiplication and multiplication fo matrices
  • Transpose of a matrix
  • Determinant of a square matrix
  • Properties of determinants ( statement only).
  • Minor, cofactor and adjoint of Matrix.
  • Non-singular matrix.
  • Inverse of a matrix.
  • Finding area of a triangle


  • Trigonometric functions
  • addition and subtraction formula
  • formulae involving multiple and submultiple angles
  • General Solution of Trigonometric equations
  • Properties of triangle
  • inverse trigonometric functions and their properties

Coordinate Geometry of two dimensions

  • Distance formula, Section formula
  • Area of Triangle
  • Condition of colinearity of three points in a plane
  • Polar coordinates
  • Transformation from Cartesian to polar coordinates vice versa
  • Parallel transformation of axes, concept of locus, elementary locus problem
  • Slope of a line.
  • Equation of lines in different forms, angle between two lines
  • Condition of perpendicularity and parallelism of two lines
  • Distance of a point from a line.
  • Distance between two parallel lines.
  • Lines through the point of intersection of two lines
  • Equation of a circle with a given center and radius
  • Condition that a general equation of second degree in x, y may represent a circle.
  • Equation of tangent, normal and chord.
  • Equation of common chord of two intersecting circles.

Co-ordinate geometry of three dimensions

  • Distance between two points and section formula
  • Equation of a straight line
  • Equation of a plane and distance of a point from a plane.

Differential calculus:

  • Functions,
  • Composition of two functions and inverse of a function,
  • Limit,
  • Continuity, derivative, chain rule,
  • Derivative of implicit functions and functions defined parametrically.

Integral calculus:

  • Integration as a reverse process of differentiation,
  • indefinite integral of standard functions.
  • Integration by parts.
  • Integration by substitution and partial fraction.

Differential Equations

  • Formation of ordinary differential equations
  • Solution of homogeneous differential equations
  • Separation of variables methods
  • linear first order differential equations

Differential Calculus

  • Functions, composition of two functions and inverse of a function, limit, continuity, derivative, chain rule, derivative of implicit functions and functions defined parametrically.

Application of Calculus:

  • Tangents and normals, conditions of tangency.
  • Determination of monotonicity, maxima and minima.
  • Differential coefficient as a measure of rate.
  • Motion in a straight line with constant acceleration.
  • Geometric interpretation of definite integral as area, calculation of area bounded by elementary curves and Straight lines.
  • Area of the region included between two elementary curves.


  • Addition of vectors,
  • scalar multiplication,
  • dot and cross products, scalar triple product.

Sets, Relations and Mappings:

  • Idea of sets, subsets, power set, complement, union, intersection and difference of sets,
  • Venn diagram,
  • De Morgan's Laws,
  • Inclusion / Exclusion formula for two or three finite sets,
  • Cartesian product of sets.
  • Relation and its properties.
  • Equivalence relation — definition and elementary examples, mappings, range and domain, injective, surjective and bijective mappings, composition of mappings, inverse of a mapping.

Permutation and combination:

  • Permutation of n different things taken r at a time (r ≤ n).
  • Permutation of n things not all different.
  • Permutation with repetitions (circular permutation excluded).
  • Combinations of n different things taken r at a time (r ≤ n).
  • Combination of n things not all different.
  • Basic properties.
  • Problems involving both permutations and combinations.

Statistics and Probability:

  • Measure of dispersion, mean, variance and standard deviation, frequency distribution.
  • Addition and multiplication rules of probability, conditional probability and Bayes’ Theorem, independence of events, repeated independent trails and Binomial distribution
  • Can visualize three dimensional objects in two dimensional drawings.
  • Awareness regarding profession
  • Can identify commonly used materials, textures and objects.

NATA Exam pattern for Drawing Test

The drawing test aims at judging the sketching, creativity and innovation of the candidate. NATA Exam Highlights for Drawing Test is given below:

  • It is carried out in paper-pencil mode i.e. offline mode
  • There will be a total of 2 questions. Each question will carry 40 marks
  • The weightage of the test is 80 marks with three drawing based questions in the NATA Question Paper
  • A total of 90 minutes is provided to attempt the paper
  • There is no provision of negative marking

NATA Syllabus 2018 for Drawing Test

NATA 2017 Paper 2 is of 90 minutes. It will test the sketching and visualization ability of a candidate. As it is a drawing exam, hence there is no well-defined syllabus for it. Candidates can practice for the test from the NATA 2018 Sample Papers to improve their skills and score well in the test. Also, it is advised to practice questions on the basis of following criteria:

  • Ability to sketch a given object proportionately and rendering the same in visually appealing manner.
  • Visualizing and drawing the effects of light on the object and shadows cast on surroundings.
  • The sense of perspective drawing.
  • Geometric composition, shape, building forms and elements, aesthetics, color texture, harmony and contrast.
  • Combining and composing given three-dimensional elements to form a building or structural form.
  • Creating interesting two-dimensional compositions using given shapes and forms.
  • Creating visual harmony using colors in given composition.
  • Understanding of scale and proportions of objects.
  • Drawing from memory through pencil sketch on themes from day to day experiences.

NATA Preparation

Candidate has to enhance and prepare for both the parts of the NATA Exam separately. One candidate must prepare for the NATA according to the NATA Syllabus thoroughly by following the preparation tips and considering the preparation books tabulated below:

NATA Preparation tips

  • Read the instructions given carefully. There may be changes in them from previous papers you have attempted.
  • Never stick on one question. It may shorten your time for the next question. Jump quickly to next questions.
  • Attempt the questions which you find easy to crack initially.
  • Answer all the questions because there is no negative marking.
  • Understand the NATA Exam pattern properly. It saves you from panic when you see your question paper.
  • Do take mock tests once in a week or a month to check how much have you improved?
  • Know your strength and weaknesses.
  • After going through your syllabus once, increase the number of mock tests you take.
  • Join any test series with NATA coaching centers.
