Last Updated - March 14, 2018

Mohit Gulati appeared for the JEE Main examination in the year 2010. He scored 60 marks in the same. He could seek admissions in Manav Rachna International University. Let’s read about the preparation tips he has to share for your help.

Ques. What did you choose- Offline or Online mode for taking up the exam?

Ans. At that time it was only the offline mode. But if it was the present time I would have chosen the online mode as offline mode consumes a lot of paper. As the present world is of technology so I would request and ask every future student to appear in online mode of examination as it would give them a fine experience to how to appear and prepare for such online tests.

Ques. Did you qualify for JEE-Advanced?

Ans. No there wasn’t any JEE Advanced when I appeared for the examination.

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Coaching ClassesNCERT Text BooksCoaching Printed Study MaterialOnline Study MaterialSubject Wise ClassesSelf-Study

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did they help in your story?

Ans. I took coaching classes. It was a good experience as teachers there prepare you to appear in the exams with the required skills. We have to study the same subjects in school as well as in coaching classes but there is a lot difference in the teachers of both the places. Teachers at coaching classes teach you the topics and inculcates the qualities required to appear in exams such as time management, speed, accuracy, hit and trial etc. So I would prefer to take classes if I have to appear in any competitive exam.

Ques. Rate the role of Coaching Institutes in cracking JEE Main

Ans. I would rate my coaching classes as 9 out of 10 as it helped me to score well in the examination.

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. Time management is really required. Since one has to go school from 7:30- 2:00 and then to coaching classes from 4:00-7:00. After this you are required to devote some time for self-study. One has to also manage the lab work of the school and various others. You can either go for coaching classes on weekends or you have to really manage your time-table if you want to take classes on week days.

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans.Strong: My concentration power was very high. If I was studying then my entire concentration was on my books. No other thought struck my mind during studying.
Weak: Though I had a high concentration power, I lacked in utilizing my time to prepare for exams for the exams well. I actually wasted my time by roaming here and there.
So to improve that I went to my friend’s house to utilize my time or I took online lectures. Talking to seniors and teachers taught me the ways to utilize my time.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. Various mock papers available at book shops, mock papers provided by school teachers, by coaching institute, available online and various previous years papers were solved or taken by me. These papers are really good to solve as they can give you idea how to prepare and what type of questions are asked in the exam. One can really improve his/her speed to solve questions with the help of such papers. If anyone is not able to take coaching classes because of any reason than he or she must solve these mock test papers to improve their skills.

TEST Your Preparation with JEE MAIN Test Papers

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. the books that I preferred for Physics preparation were:

  • Pradeep’s book

I was really week in physics so I gave extra time to physics so that I can perform well. After getting the knowledge about the topic I solved many mock test papers to improve my basics and took special classes for physics. Pradeep’s book have many objective type questions so one should solve them to get prepare for exams. I watched many online lectures to improve my physics. As physics is generally the second toughest paper after mathematics in JEE it really requires attention. While reading the theory, I marked the important theorems, paid attention to the assumptions that are being made to derive a formula and kept them in mind.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. All three parts of chemistry- organic, physical and inorganic are equally important. Organic was toughest for me. So I didn't try to learn all the reactions thoroughly. I understood the properties of the reagents well and remember their action for quick use, like alcoholic KOH does dehydrohalogenation. The next most important part of chemistry is inorganic chemistry. It is good to know the entire periodic table for it. I observed various trends in the physical properties and chemical properties of elements, along the periods and down the groups. I learned all the exceptions and specialties of all elements. I paid extra attention to co-ordination compounds and d-block elements. I would like to mention that it is difficult to master all the chapters. But some chapters are quite easy to understand and often quite scoring (though they might be boring due to lots of new concepts). So such chapters must be mastered. At last a final but very crucial point, don’t jump over various books. Just choose one good book and follow it thoroughly.

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. Mathematics is the most vital part of the IIT JEE syllabus. Topics like probability, differential calculus, trigonometry, straight lines and circles in coordinate geometry, permutations and combinations in algebra are always easy to crack in IIT JEE. The success mantra of the JEE is practice and hard work. Gone are the days when students used to spend hours in attempting one question. Now it is an era of multiple choice questions. The mathematics questions in JEE Main test a student’s acquired knowledge as well as his aptitude. Maths is the subject where one can score very well in short period of time. I liked mathematics so I had to pay less attention to mathematics because I scored really well in it. For mathematics I followed

  • The study material given by my coaching institute

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. If I would have been more dedicated towards my self-study I would have got a better college. I was not much serious about my studies at that time.

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. 4 months before the examination, one must really see his or her strong topics. He must be thorough with such topics and should solve more number of questions on that topic. This must be done so that if any type of question comes in exam he should be able to solve that. For weak topics also one should give some specific time and try to improve them. One should practice weak topics by solving some questions related to those topics also. This must be done so that one is able to solve questions related to those topics in the examination.
