JEE Main 2017: Gateway To the Top Engineering Colleges

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam) is a national level, top most exam in India for the aspirants who want to get admission in the undergraduate programmes in the field of engineering,architecture or other technological courses.JEE Main is conducted by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) in both online and offline mode. It is an exam consisting of 2 tier:JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

JEE Main consists of two papers that are: Paper-1: - this is an exam which is conducted for the aspirants who want to get admission in the engineering programmes (BE/B.Tech) and Paper-2: for the candidates aspiring for architecture programmes (B.Arch./B. Planning). The candidates who qualify the JEE Main can then sit for the JEE Advanced. The JEE Maineligible candidates can then get admission in various NITs (National Institutes of Technology),IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and other Centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) located across India


Changes in JEE Main 2017

For the year of 2017, a few changes have been made in the JEE Main Exam. Mentioned below are the tentative changes that might be made in the exam:

  • The candidates are informed that there will be no normalization using the Class XII marks. Board marks will not be considered in making final ranks for JEE Main appearing candidates. The 40 - 60 rule is removed now. The reason for this is, this rule saw many disparities between many boards and candidates ranks and ended dreams of many deserving candidates. Hence, with many complaints and writs, the pattern is called off and no weightage to board marks will be given in preparing the rank of a candidate who has given JEE Main.
  • Eligibility Criteria for qualified candidates has been modified for admission purposes as follows:
    Candidates must have secured at least 75% in their class XII or must have come in the top 20 percentile in their respective school boards.
    For SC/ST candidates the percentage to be considered is 65%.

JEE Main: Important Dates

This year the exam of JEE Main will be conducted in the month of April, right now the dates have not been announced yet. Hence, the aspiring candidate should make sure he/she keeps a close check on the JEE Main Important Dates. They are required to regularly visit the official website of JEE Main for the latest updates for the same. The form for the exam will be available online only but the exam will be conducted in both online and offline mode.

The candidate should thoroughly go through the JEE Main Application Process before deciding to move to the next level. They will initially have to go through the Process and then fill in the JEE Main Application Form accordingly. The candidate will then be issued the JEE Main Admit Card and the candidate will sit for the exam at their JEE Main Examination Center as mentioned on the Admit card

JEE Main: Application Process

The candidates are supposed to visit the official website so as to see the Application form for JEE Main and then fill the same. The application form is available online only. As the procedure is supposed to be done online, the candidates need not submit any documents to any of the authorities. Mentioned below are the steps in brief to be followed by the candidates to get themselves registered:

  • Registration: the candidate has to first register themselves for the exam. They have to provide their name, mobile number, email id etc. They are supposed to choose a username and password for their login ID and this ID will be used in the entire process of JEE Main admissions.
  • Application Form Filling: After logging in, the candidates are supposed to enter their Board Examination Details, JEE Main2017 Details of the exam, Contact & Guardian Details etc.
  • Exam center: the candidate is supposed to provide the choices of exam centers as well depending upon the mode of exam i.e. how will they give the exam, Online or Offline Mode.
  • Fee Payment: Fees can be paid online through Credit or Debit Card plus service charges or Offline through by depositing fee in cash in the Syndicate/Canara/ICICI/HDFC bank through e-challan generated during the online filling of application form.
  • Confirmation Page: After the submission of the application form, a confirmation page will be generated with the details of the candidates as in the application form. This page has to be kept safe by all applicants. They need not send this confirmation page to the JEE Main 2017 authorities.

The candidates should know that the JEE Main Admit Card will be available for download only from the second week of March 2017 (tentatively). Candidates must log in to access and download the same. Only candidates who have filled their application form successfully and paid the fees will be able to download the Admit Card. They have to go through the below mentioned steps to successfully download their Admit Card:

  • Candidates must log in by entering their application number and date of birth.
  • They can access their admit card and print it.
  • It is advisable to check the details given on the admit card before printing it.
  • The admit card will display the candidate’s information along with the Roll No. and the exam schedule as well as the photograph and signature of the candidate.

Candidates who are appearing for their Class XII in 2017 or for improvement in 2017 must enter their Class XII Roll No. before downloading and printing their admit card.

JEE Main: Syllabus

As there has been a little bit of change in the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria, but as of now there has been no notification regarding any changes in the syllabus for this year. The syllabus for JEE Main as we know is prescribed and given by the authorities. Candidates must study the given topics in detail to prepare well for the JEE Main exam. The syllabus is generally a mix of the class XI and XII syllabus of the school boards. Candidates will have to study and prepare accordingly.The Syllabus for JEE Main will be available for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and students will have to prepare from that accordingly.

The candidates should now keep the following points in their mind:

  • Firstly, they should keep a regular check on the official website for the latest updates.
  • Secondly, it is recommended for the candidates to study from NCERT (especially for Chemistry) as it remains the best book for the exam.
  • Thirdly, the objective question banks and previous papers will prove to be handy and a focused study of 5 to 6 hours is needed daily with atleast 3 hours for problem solving and 2 hours for understanding the theory of the concepts learned is recommended.
  • It is important for the candidate to make a time table. They should start preparing it right away.
  • Also, they should start making decision right away because as we all know time stops for nobody. So, the aspirants must catch their breath and start doing it now.

JEE Advanced: The Next Level

Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced is the second stage exam that comes after the CBSE, JEE Main. A JEE Main eligible candidate can only give this exam.The exam also consists of 2 Papers: Paper-1 and Paper-2 and both of them are supposed to be attempted by the candidate. The medium of answering the exam can be in Hindi or English.

The candidate gets 2 attempts and he/ she has to give the exam consecutively. And unlike JEE Main where a candidate gets an option to give it through online or offline mode,JEE Advanced is supposed to be given through Offline Mode i.e. both the exams will be paper based only. JEE Main tests the candidates speed of solving problems, whereas JEE Advanced tests the logical skills of the candidate, based on their conceptual knowledge of the subject.

JEE Main score acts as an eligibility criterion for the candidate who wants to sit for the JEE Advanced exam. If the candidates clear the cut off JEE Main, they can then go for JEE Advanced.
