JEE Main 2020: Major Changes Introduced in Exam Pattern and Fee

NTA has come up with the latest changes in JEE Main Exam Pattern 2020. With the release of official notification on September 3, 2019, NTA has declared that a separate paper will be conducted for the students seeking admission in B.Planning program through JEE Main exam. Previously, the exam comprised only two papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 was conducted for admission in B.Tech program and Paper 2 was conducted admission in B.Arch/B.Planning program.

Latest - JEE Main 2020 Registration has been started from 11 AM onwards on September 3, 2019 in online mode. Candidates can register themselves by visiting the official website i.e. jeemain.nta.nic.in. Register Now!

Apart from one additional paper, there have been a few more changes introduced like a decrease in the number of questions, the introduction of a new type of questions, increased application fee, etc. Read on the article to get an in-depth knowledge of all the latest changes introduced in the exam.


JEE Main 2020 Exam Highlights

  • Last date to fill JEE Main Application Form 2020 for January session is September 30, 2019 up to 11:50 PM.
  • The application fees can be paid until October 1, 2019 in online mode only.
  • JEE Main 2020 January session is scheduled to be held from January 6 - 11, 2020 while April session is scheduled from April 3 - 9, 2020.
  • B.E./B/Tech and B.Arch paper will be conducted in two shifts i.e. Morning (9:30 AM - 12:30 PM) and Evening (2:30 PM- 5:30 PM) while B.Planning paper will be conducted in single-shift i.e. from 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM.
  • Candidates can also opt for more than one paper. In case candidates opt for B.Arch and B.Planning both, then their exam timing will be 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM.
  • JEE Main Syllabus is kept the same as the previous year.
  • The exam will be conducted in computer-based mode only (except Drawing test for B.Arch).

  • JEE Main Result 2020 for January Session will be declared on January 31. 
Note -A separate notice will be released for JEE Main April Session. Candidates will be required to apply for the same separately. Candidates who have appeared in the January session can also appear in the April session.

Changes in JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern

As per the recent notification by NTA, JEE Main exam pattern has been revamped. Till 2019, the exam was conducted for B.E./B.Tech program and B.Arch/B. Planning program. From now onwards, instead of combined paper for B.Arch and B.Plan. a separate paper for B.Plan. will be conducted as it has been approved by JEE Apex Board. 

With the changes in the number of papers, there has been a decrease in number of questions asked in JEE Main exam.

  • Till 2019, the questions asked in the exam were multiple choice type questions only but this year numerical answer type questions are also included.
  • The number of subject-wise questions (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) which was 30 previous year, is reduced to 25 this year.
  • Previously, in the drawing test of B.Arch paper, only 1 question of 70 marks was asked which comprised of 3 parts. This year, 2 questions will be asked in the drawing test with a total weightage of 100 marks.
  • 4 marks will be allotted to each correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong attempt (Only for MCQs). No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.
  • No negative marking for questions with numerical value answers.

Changes in JEE Main 2020 Application Fee

JEE Main Application fee has been revised. The application fee for different category candidates from India and outside India is different. Candidates have an option to take more than one paper. In case a candidate wants to take more than one paper, they have to pay an additional amount.

  • The application fee has been increased up to a certain percentage.
  • Previously, the application fee of a single paper (Paper 1 or Paper 2) for Indian Boy(General/Gen-EWS/ OBC(NCL)) was INR 500 while for Indian Girl(General/Gen-EWS/ OBC(NCL)), it was INR 250.
  • General/Gen-EWS/ OBC(NCL) Boys from India who had taken both the tests last year had to pay an application fee of amount INR 1300 and girls had to pay INR 650.

Changes in JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria

There is as such no change in eligibility criteria of JEE Main. As a new paper has been added a below given is the qualifying criteria for different papers of JEE Main 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques – In which languages is the question paper available?

Ans – For centers, the language of question paper is English and Hindi. For JEE Main exam centers in cities like Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, the question paper will be in English, Hindi, Gujarati. Candidates have to opt for the language of the question paper while filling the online application form. 

Ques – How many attempts can a candidate give in JEE Main?

Ans – Total attempts for JEE Main is three. Since the exam is conducted twice a year, and candidates have an option to take both the test in both the session. Therefore, the total attempt is increased to six. 

Ques – Is it mandatory to give JEE Main exam twice a year? If I’ll take both the tests, which score will be considered?

Ans –  It’s completely the choice of a candidate whether they want to take a single session test or both the sessions. If a candidate appears in both the tests, best score out of two will be considered.

Ques – When will be the mock tests for JEE Main 2020 available?

Ans – NTA JEE Main 2020 Mock tests are available now. Candidates can register themselves to access the mock tests and practice the same at TPCs.It is to be noted that the mock tests are downloadable.
