JEE MAIN 2017 Preparation Tips by Suraj

Updated On - June 21st 2019

Suraj scored 113 marks in JEE Main 2014. Suraj particularly feels that students with average academic record need to prepare through coaching classes. For Physics, Suraj Feels NCERT or any other course book is not the best option. He accredits his coaching center Aakash Institute for his success in JEE Main.

Some of the excerpts from the interview are discussed below. Aspirants can check out some of the interesting preparation tips that Suraj has to offer.

Ques. What did you choose- Offline or Online mode for taking up the exam?

Ans. I chose Online mode for JEE MAIN-2014. (I also have the experience of offline mode of JEE MAIN as my first attempt of JEE MAIN was in the year 2013)

JEE MAIN (Online):- There isn't much difference in the pattern or difficulty of questions in either mode

  • Next comes Ease of Use:- It's all simple. No special knowledge of computer is required for the online exam. All those students who think that they can't use computer very well, they' dont have to worry about it.
  • You get to see only one window on the screen and that is of the exam software. You just enter your roll no., read instructions and start solving questions. (Unlimited rough sheets are provided for rough work) Students who prefer the exam in Hindi can switch to Hindi language with just one click.
  • The biggest advantage of online exam over offline exam is that you can change your answer any time unlike the offline mode.

JEE MAIN Offline:-

  • One of the biggest advantages of offline mode is that you're relatively comfortable while attempting the question as during your whole preparation time you'll be studying and giving exams offline (on a paper).
  • Another advantage is that you get to solve questions on the question paper just right next to the question.
  • Lastly, don't expect your online exam center to be allotted right in your town or the place you live.(Most of the times they give allot you a center a bit away from your home). If you don't want to travel before the day of exam, go for online but you'll still have to travel a little.

FINAL VERDICT:-  Online or Offline...This isn't even a question to be worried about. Your performance will be the same either you give the offline mode or online mode. Just go with your gut feelings or chose as per your comfort.

Ques. Did you qualify for JEE Advanced?

Ans. Yes

Ques. How would you rate the following Preparation Strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?

Coaching ClassesNCERT Text BooksCoaching Study MaterialOnline Study MaterialSubject Wise ClassesSelf-Study

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did they help in your story?

Ans. "Whether you need coaching classes or not, it all comes down to you. If you've been a genius or excellent student in academics and have good intellect, then you can manage to clear JEE-main with a good school curriculum (not the government schools) and hardwork, consistency and a little guidance. And if you're an average student in academics then you definitely need coaching classes.

Advantages of Combined coaching institutes

  1. Their curriculum is good. Nobody knows the pattern and the method to prepare for JEE Main and advanced as well as these institutes know.(Trust me on that)
  2. A lot of teachers are available. (You can switch your batch and teacher if you want to in early stages but it's a very difficult process)
  3. By abundance of teachers, I also mean that a lot of teachers are present in the staff room all the time. So you're free to take doubts from any teacher(there are about 15-20 teachers in an institute). Weekly tests, monthly tests, All India test series, you name it.
  4. Combined coaching institutes do give you tips on XII board exams and when the XII board exams are near, they conduct special classes for XII board exams and even conduct written tests.
  5. At the end of the year, they also conduct classes for revision of XI syllabus.

Ques. Rate the role of Coaching Institutes in cracking JEE Main

Ans. 7

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. If your concepts are clear and good then you can perform well both in JEE MAIN and XII board exam.

By clear, I mean, that you can easily do these two things.

  1. Apply the concept in numerical
  2. Explain the concept

I went to both CBSE board school and coaching institute and tried to maintain a balance between the two. Though, I focused more on coaching institute and preparing for JEE MAIN

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. "I was very weak in mathematics. So, to improve my mathematics, I stuck to NCERT mathematics and finished practicing the book two times. NCERT really improves your base.

I was average in physics. What I did and what I recommend for improving physics is focusing the most on the class notes and the concepts told in the class.

My strongest subject was chemistry. Chemistry requires literally no brain, it's all mugging up and there's only one book you need to study and refer to and that is NCERT.

NCERT chemistry is essential for both JEE MAIN and XII board."

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. My recommendation for studying physics is focusing on the most of the class notes and the concepts told in the class.

Don't go for any book, just solve the coaching material because in JEE Main, Physics is the section which has the least probability of questions coming from any book.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. "Chemistry requires literally no brain, it's all mugging up and there's only one book you need to study and refer to and that is NCERT.

NCERT chemistry is essential for both JEE MAIN and XII board.

But most of all, you should study the notes in the coaching class very well and should regularly attempt objective questions from the coaching institute study material.

Do attempt the questions from NCERT. This won't just clear your concepts but will also prepare you for JEE MAIN(Do keep a NCERT solution book with you else you'll get frustrated)"

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. "PRACTICE!!  Just one word is enough.

Stick to three things

  1. NCERT. Practice every single question from NCERT.Do keep a NCERT solution book with you else you'll get frustrated.
  2. Coaching institute study material
  3. Regularity in practicing maths question. Finishing practicing the chapters side by side with the curriculum in coaching institute."

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. Just two things:-

  1. Joining Aakash institute right from XI (11th class)
  1. Be more consistent"

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. "You're doomed!”, that's all I have to say.

If you're going to start studying 4 months before the exam, you either need a magic pen that'll mark correct answers for you or sheer luck on the day of exam so that you guess all answers correctly.

Still, I'll recommend to focus more on XII board.

Do these three things

  1. For chemistry, learn the theory from NCERT thoroughly and attempt all the NCERT questions at the end of each chapter.
  2. In case of Maths, practice each and every question in that book and nothing can stop you from getting a satisfactory score.(I recommend Objective mathematics book by the author Arihant if you think NCERT is not enough)
  3. Physics isn't a subject that can be studied in 4 months especially when you have other subjects to study.
