How to Prepare Quantitative Aptitude for XAT?

Quantitative Aptitude is undoubtedly the toughest section asked in Xavier’s Aptitude Test. With over 30 questions in the section, Quantitative Aptitude is a major deciding factor in preparation of XAT 2017 Merit List and Cutoff. The main aim of the section is to test candidates’ ability to solve complex problems in minimum possible time.

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national level entrance examination conducted by XLRI to provide admissions to management courses. XAT Exam is divided into two parts. Part A consists of Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability, and Decision Making & Analytical Reasoning while part B consists of general knowledge and English comprehension. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation is one of the most important sections and it is also considered  a difficult section than in any other MBA entrance examination. So, candidates are advised to prepare for quantitative ability and data interpretation efficiently and practice hard.

XAT 2017 scores are accepted by XLRI and 100 other institutes for admissions in their management programs. It is an offline test i.e. pen-paper based test. It was successfully conducted on January 08, 2017. XAT 2017 was held in 47 cities across India and 2 international cities. Around 92,000 candidates appeared for the XAT 2017 exam. The competition is tough, so students are advised to go through the chapter- wise preparation tips given in this article. 

XAT Quantitative Ability Preparation Strategy

There is no set syllabus of Quantitative Ability section in XAT. Quantitative Ability syllabus is vast, so questions can be asked from any part of Mathematics. This should be seen as an opportunity as there are plenty of topics from which candidates can score marks easily.

Type 1: Important topics

These topics are very important as questions from these topics are often asked. Students should make a study plan and prepare these topics first. Don’t try to attempt all questions but understand the concepts of these topics. While practicing mock tests, candidates are advised to solve questions from these topics first.

XAT Quantitative Aptitude Preparation Tips

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation account for Maximum weightage of 37% in XAT percentile calculation. Out of 78 questions, 29 are of Quant and DI.  Out of 29 questions, 22 questions are asked from Quantitative Ability and 7 questions from DI. The difficulty level of Quant and DI section in XAT is considered higher than any other MBA entrance exam. Here are some important tips & tricks that candidates must read before starting their hard-core Quantitative Ability preparation:

  • Proper Planning: Candidates should prepare a study plan and study accordingly for each chapter of the XAT 2018.
  • Start from the basics: There is no set syllabus for XAT exam. Go back to the basics of Mathematics, however easy you may think it to be because it is often seen that questions asked in XAT are basic questions and candidates cannot even answer those.
  • Memorize important formulas, theorems and tables: Quantitative Aptitude includes a lot of formulas, theorems, tables, etc. Make flash cards and note down all the important formulas and theorems. Keep it handy so that you can glance at it any time.
  • Mark strong and weak sections: While solving different questions, candidates may find some topics to be more difficult than other topics. For this, candidates should separate weak and strong chapters or topics. This helps candidates in making a preparation plan and study accordingly. It is advised to study weak topics first.      
  • Time Management: Proper time management leads to increase in efficiency and productivity. Candidates should practice mock tests and previous years paper to improve their speed and accuracy.
  • Go through Mock tests: Test your approach towards solving questions with the help of online mock tests and practice papers. Candidates need to pass individual sections and thus they cannot avoid any of them and move to the other.
  • Set a goal: Categorization and division of topics as per the assigned time help in achieving your set target. Don’t give too much attention to one part of the syllabus and ignore the other.
  • Make use of Techniques: Quant section may include lengthy calculations. So, to accentuate your speed and save time, practice a lot of shortcut techniques and use them while solving questions.
  • Be Healthy: All the aspiring candidates should remain calm and composed. Don’t try to mug up your formulae as a night owl.
  • Negative marking: Many tests follow negative marking, so it is advisable not to attempt too many questions on guesswork. In case if you have to then apply the process of elimination (POE) to eliminate the more probable incorrect choices to zero-in on the correct one.
