Last Updated - May 01, 2018

Abishake Koul got 98.4 percentile in XAT 2015. He was able to get admission in IIM Lucknow. His strategies for various subject to crack XAT are very handy and are worth to share with the aspirant those who want to crack XAT 2019. Below are the strategies he followed:

For DI & LR: He says, you should be familiar with all types of case lets. All types of questions should be bread and butter for you before the exam. This is the section which makes the difference between a mediocre and a good percentile.

For Quant: He says that don't leave any topic uncovered. On the exam day, it might so occur that the difficult topic you have left has more weightage compared to those you have covered. This affects sectional scores, resulting in decreased percentage. Books He Followed are Time material & Arun Sharma.

For General Awareness: News Apps on phone and GK exams on websites like successcds, tcyonline

His Success sayings for the aspirants:

1. Practice RC's. You can't escape them.
2. Don't leave any topic uncovered in Quant. On D'day, it might so happen that your favorite topic springs up a difficult question while the topic you have left has an easy one.
3. Decision making: Prepare for it as many people get less in the section and lose out on getting shortlists.
4. Mocks. Give as many as you can.
5. Last year Q's. I have always believed that solving previous year q's gives you the confidence no other thing can give.

Other questions which we asked him on interview are:

Ques. How many GDPI did you take part in?

Ans. There were separate GD's for HR & BM courses.
In XLRI GD's there was a lot of time for discussion and as such everyone gets time to speak.
To prepare, I took part in various mock GD's & PI's at coaching classes.

There were general Questions. No grilling. In HR, they asked a little on the rights in Indian constitution & qualities of a manager according to me. In my BM interview, the discussion mostly revolved around work-ex.
Some tips:

  • Do prepare a backup question which the panel might ask you after the interview. It leaves a good impression on the panel and shows your keen interest.
  • Always be composed even if you don't know most of the questions being asked. The panel might be putting additional stress.
  • Try leading the interview by saying out things about which you are fully confident and want the panel to question you on.
  • Why MBA? It is a sure shot question. You should be convinced yourself on this to convince the panel.

Ques. How did you manage your XAT preparation along with your Graduation studies/working hours?

Ans. I joined coaching and went on weekdays after office so that I could have the weekend to prepare on my own. Coaching helps especially if you are working. Also, I used apps on phone to prepare while commuting.

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. Quant: Strong & Verbal: Weak

For Verbal, I used to work on the handouts in class and the material provided by coaching classes. I used to do RCs from online websites. One book which helped me a lot to easily cope up with the vocabulary in CAT was Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis.

Ans. Previous year papers and mock exams from TIME series

Ques. Websites you followed regularly for practicing sample papers and get updates?

Ans. I only followed Time website

Ques. Share your thoughts on the Strategy for the aspirant who is starting two months before the exam.

Ans. Make your own strategy for the exam. Don't listen to what others are saying. Keep practicing and form your own plan based on the mocks you are giving. Pick your strong section first- it worked for me.
Before the exam, my advice would be to take a minimum 15 day leave if you are working and work on your build up to the exam.

Also, XAT exam is a little predictable based on the last year papers. So, do solve them. Keep practicing!

Ques. Essay: Discuss the Strategy followed.

Ans. I write well. So, I didn't prepare much as I was confident of doing well naturally here.
