JEE Advanced 2027: Detailed Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced 2027 has two compulsory papers, each with 51 questions divided into four sections per subject. JEE Advanced Question Types 2027

JEE Advanced 2027 uses four distinct question formats across its two papers. Each format tests a different cognitive skill — concept precision, multi-concept depth, calculation accuracy, and contextual reasoning. 1. Single Correct MCQ (Section I — Both Papers)

2. Multiple Correct MCQ (Section II — Both Papers)

You earn partial marks (+1 to +3) for correctly identifying some but not all correct options — provided you do not select any wrong option. Selecting even one wrong option triggers –2 marks. 3. Non-Negative Integer Type (Section III — Both Papers)

The answer is a non-negative integer, entered via keyboard on the computer screen. There is no negative marking — a wrong answer scores 0. This section carries the highest marks per subject per paper (24 out of 60) and is the safest to attempt in full. These questions reward multi-step calculation accuracy and in-depth problem-solving ability.

4a. Match the List (Section IV — Paper 1 Only)

You receive two lists and must choose the correct combination of matches from four given options. The question is a single-correct MCQ (you pick one combination). Marks: +3 correct, –1 wrong. The IITs often design these with closely matched distractors — eliminate wrong combination options systematically before selecting.

4b. Paragraph-Based / Comprehension (Section IV — Paper 2 Only)

A passage or scientific scenario is followed by 2 to 4 questions based on the same context. Each question is a single-correct MCQ. Marks: +3 correct, –1 wrong. Read the passage carefully before answering all linked questions — a misread passage affects all its associated questions at once.

JEE Advanced AAT Exam Pattern 2027

The Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is a separate test for JEE Advanced qualifiers who wish to pursue B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, or IIT (BHU) Varanasi. Unlike the main exam papers, AAT is a 3-hour offline pen-and-paper test evaluated subjectively by architecture faculty. It is qualifying in nature — no separate AAT rank list is generated; shortlisting for B.Arch seats is based on JEE Advanced rank plus AAT performance.

Only students who qualify JEE Advanced 2027 are eligible to register for AAT 2027 — registration opens the day after the JEE Advanced result is declared.

How to Prepare Based on JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced 2027 rewards accuracy and section-specific strategy over raw speed. With differential negative marking across question types and a full 6-hour exam day, your preparation must be calibrated to the pattern’s specific risk and reward structure — not just subject knowledge.

1. Prioritise Section III (Integer-Type) across all subjects: Integer questions carry 24 marks per subject per paper — the highest of all four sections — with zero negative marking. Accurate integer answers are the safest path to a high score. Build calculation discipline before focusing on MCQ strategy.
2. Treat Section II (Multiple Correct MCQ) as a precision zone, not a volume zone: The –2 penalty for any wrong option can quickly erase gains from two correct Section I answers. Attempt Section II only when you can confidently eliminate all wrong options. Leaving it blank (0 marks) beats a wrong attempt (–2 marks).
3. Use elimination to improve Section I and IV MCQ accuracy: At +3/–1, you need to be correct more than 25% of the time to break even on a guessed question. Narrow four options to two using elimination — this shifts the odds in your favour without requiring full certainty.
