What after JEE Advanced 2018? Roadmap to B.Tech Admission in IITs

Students who want to pursue Engineering, Sciences or Architecture courses from any of the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) or Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc), JEE Advanced is the way. Around top 2 lakhs JEE Main All India Rank (AIR) holders have qualified for JEE Advanced 2018. However, JEE Advanced is just the first step to get admission into the B.Tech courses offered by IITs. 

There are as many as 10,988 seats in 23 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and IISC Bangalore to be filled based on JEE Advanced 2018 score and candidates’ performance in Class XII or equivalent examination. Students will have to clear the qualifying marks, register for the counselling process, and few more step to fulfil their dream of getting admission in one of the IITs.

Why is JEE Advanced important?

JEE Advanced is one of the most important national level entrance examinations in India, for students who wish to study Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences or Architecture from IITs. JEE Advanced is the second level of entrance exam after JEE Main, top 2, 24,000 All India Rank holders in JEE Main will be eligible for JEE Advanced.

What's new in JEE Advanced 2018?

  • For the admission year 2018, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has decided to increase the number of applicants shortlisted for JEE Advanced. 4000 more candidates will be shortlisted based on JEE Main 2018 Score from this year. 
  • JEE Advanced will be conducted entirely in online mode.
  • The reservation for PwD candidates has increased to 5% from 3%. Read More JEE Advanced Reservation 
  • From this year “Supernumerary seats” will be created for female candidates to increase their presence from 8% (existing) to 14%.

Estimate JEE Advanced score with answer key

Candidates can estimate their provisional score in JEE Advanced 2018 using the official answer key released by the conducting authority. JEE Advanced 2018 official answer keys will be published at the website on May 29.  The conducting body will also send the copy of candidates’ responses to their registered email address. 

Many recognized coaching institutes also release their own answer keys to help candidates compare their own responses and estimate their score before the announcement of results.

The answer keys will be made available on the official website of JEE Advanced 2018. Candidates will be able to challenge the answer key till 17:00 IST on May 30, 2018, if they have objections to any of the answers given in the answer key at

What after JEE Advanced Result?

JEE Advanced 2018 Result will be declared online on June 10, 2018, at 10 AM as per official notification. Aspirants who will qualify the exam will be eligible to take part in the JoSAA counselling session for JEE Advanced.

Qualified applicants are required to register themselves online and select their preferred college and course from the list available. The schedule for counselling will be uploaded on the official website after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2018 Results. Counselling for JEE Advanced is conducted by JoSAA only.

JEE Advanced Cutoff

The conducting body of JEE Advanced 2018 will release the qualifying marks required to be eligible for the counselling process and be included in the rank list. Along with the minimum marks, all the participating institutes will release a separate cut off which will include opening and closing rank. JEE Advanced 2018 cutoff for different institutes is the closing rank at which admission to a particular engineering/branch, at a particular IIT closes.

Cut-off Marks For Top 20 Percentile

The merit list of candidates in the Top 20 percentile (Class XII) list is prepared category wise. This merit list is based on the marks scored by all the qualified candidates in their respective boards in the particular year. This cut off is set and sent by the board to the conducting body of JEE Advanced.

In case board doesn’t provide any information regarding the cut off of top 20 percentile then candidates will have to produce a certificate from the respective Board mentioning that they are in the top 20 percentile list of successful candidates.

JoSAA Counselling

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts counselling and seat allocation process for JEE Main and JEE Advanced qualifying candidates. The qualified candidates will be allotted seats in all the participating institutes based on the rank, category, availability of seats and other factors. 

Allocation of the course and institute to candidates is done online. After the allotment of the seat, candidates will be required to get their document verified and pay the fee at the allotted institute to confirm admission.

JoSAA is expected to conduct counselling and seat allotment in tentatively seven rounds from the end of June 2018. The schedule for JoSAA Counselling will be updated soon after JEE Advanced 2018 Results.

JoSAA Counselling has been divided into following steps:

  • Step-1: Registration and Online Choices filling
  • Step-2: Provisional Offer of Seats & Confirmation
  • Step-3: Document Verification
  • Step-4: Reporting at the Admitting Institution

Documents Required for JoSAA Counselling

Candidates will have to provide all the necessary documents at the time of verification. Document verification process is an important part of admission procedure, failing to provide and get the documents verified may lead to cancellation of admission. 

The list of documents that must be brought (with 1 set of photocopy) at the time of document verification is:

  • Provisional Seat Allocation Letter
  • Original Admit Card of JEE Advanced 2018 
  • Medical Examination Report
  • Class X marks sheet
  • Class XII marks sheet
  • Category (OBC-NCL / SC / ST) Certificate, if applicable
  • PwD Certificate, if applicable
