Revise the Old, Learn the New is the key to crack IPU CET, says Hemant Chawla

Last Updated - January 27th 2017

All India Rank holder 3043, Hemant Chawla, appeared for IPU CET in the year 2006. He choose to take admission in Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology among all the institutes that offered admissions to him.

In his opinion, NCERT books, subject wise classes and self-study help one to obtain a good rank and scores in IPU CET. He says Dedication, hardwork and concentration is the key to get good marks. According to him joining coaching institutes after 12th for preparation of the IPU Entrance exam is quite helpful.

Let’s read about his preparation strategies to crack the IPU CET Exam in the article below.

Ques. Did you take coaching classes? If yes, how they did help in your story?

Ans. Yes, I joined coaching class to do the crash course after my class XII examinations. I had less time after XII for IPU CET Preparations so I opted for crash courses which helped me to cover maximum topics from IPU CET Syllabus. I will suggest students to join crash courses if you wish to prepare for IPU CET after class XII board exams or if you have insufficient time for the preparations.

Ques. How did you manage your IPUCET preparation along with your class 12th exam?

Ans. As I told, I prepared for IPU CET after my class XII CBSE Board exam so I covered most of the basic topics of IPU CET Syllabus during the Board exam preparations. So for quick preparations, I decided to join a crash course. I devoted most of my time for preparation of IPU CET after my Board exams were over. I studied for both IPU CET and Class XII exams by preparing a strict time table with proper time divisions for all the subjects and followed the same strictly. So make a time table only when you follow it.

Ques. What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. My Strong areas were Mathematics and Physics while I was weak in Chemistry. I found Mathematics and Physics quite interesting and loved studying them as they were my strong areas. But I found studying and preparing various topics of Chemistry monotonous, however I devoted most of the time to Chemistry in my time table. One needs to be well versed with all the subjects to score a good rank. I have been weak in memorizing the reactions so I focused more on the inorganic chemistry. Regular revision from school notes, preparation modules of the coaching and NCERT Books was my strategy to improve my weak areas.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. Although there are many mock test papers are available online and in the market as well. But I joined coaching classes which provided good mock test papers for practice. Apart from that I studied from tenures of IP University and DCE Delhi College of Engineering.

Ques. Write some of the preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. Starting 4 months before the exam is a challenge itself. For good performance, one has to focus on the subjects like – Mathematics & Science. You can practice from NCERT books which is the best way of preparation. Just go through the NCERT books properly and study material provided by the institute (if any). Also, solve all the last 10 year exam papers of IP University. Practice and solve the questions without looking for solutions. Check the latest updates online so that you stay updated about the IPU CET exam. Another thing that can help you is proper time management. Prepare a schedule and give maximum time to preparation of the weaker section.

Ques. Physics: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section

Ans. NCERT books are the best way for preparation of the physics of the IPU CET Exam. You can take some of the NCERT question papers and solve them. After being well versed with the NCERT, you can also go through another references as well. Keep in mind whenever you solve the physics questions, try to visualize them. For references, you can practice from Pradeep book and HC Verma. Stay focused and work hard. IPU CET Question Paper includes a lot of questions from the topics given below:

  • Unit and Dimensions
  • Gravitation
  • Semiconductors
  • Vectors
  • Waves
  • Atomic Physics
  • Electrostatics

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section

Ans. The major hack in this case is practicing and studying from NCERT Books. The online study material and reference books are helpful only after proper preparations from the NCERT Books. Few chemistry reference books that are helpful in IPU CET Preparation are Pradeep Publications, Modern’s ABC and Concise Inorganic Chemistry (English) 5th Edition by J.D Lee. Chemistry is an interesting subject but the thing is that one should have deep and good knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry to get good marks. As I was not good in chemistry so I selected few important topics to focus and devoted my time on are:-

  • Chemical Bonding and Periodic Table
  • Periodic Properties
  • General Organic Chemistry
  • Mole Concept & the concept of equivalents
  • Electro Chemistry
  • P-Block and S- Block Elements
  • Thermo Chemistry & the Second Law of Thermodynamics

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section

Ans. For mathematics, preparation from references books like RD Sharma, R. S. Aggarwal and Arihant etc. is very helpful as there are HOTS questions in IPU CET Mathematics section. Apart from this, you can get online mock test papers and model paper given by the coaching centers (If Any). But all the basic and easy questions are framed from the NCERT Books, so it is the key to crack this section of the IPU Entrance exam anyway. You must practice the topics given below thoroughly as there are maximum number of questions from these topics:

  • 3D and Vectors
  • Theory of Equations
  • Probability
  • Sequence and Series
  • Integral Calculus
  • Quadratic Equation
  • Differential Calculus

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. I am satisfied with what I got but still if I had chance to go back then I would improve my preparations  and practices by making time table and more focus to improve myself.
