Skip Coaching Classes, Work on Basics, says Deepak

Last Updated - December 14th 2016

All India Rank holder 3500, Deepak, appeared for IPU CET 2017 in the year 2014. He was offered Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (MAIT), University School of Information, Communication and Technology (USICT) and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering. But he chose to join Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology.

In his opinion, NCERT books, subject wise classes and self-study help one to obtain a good rank and scores in IPU CET. He says that joining coaching institutes for preparation of the IPU Entrance exam is a waste of time.

Let’s read about his preparation strategies to crack the IPU CET Exam in the article below.

Ques. Did you take coaching classes? If yes, how they did help in your story?

Ans. Yes I took coaching classes but I don’t recommend it until you are an extra ordinary student.
Coaching classes include teachings of methods to solve high order thinking skill questions. They don’t focus on clearing the doubts about the basic topics. The students there, follow a rat race to end a topic or move on to the other topics. In my view, join regular coaching classes, clear basics and try high level questions from some well-known books.

Ques. How did you manage your IPUCET preparation along with your class 12th exam?

Ans. Well, talking of the IPU CET exam, it tends to check the basic of students. When you have good knowledge of NCERT you can easily crack the IPU CET exam. The level of the exam is not as high as JEE Mains so I would say when you prepare with full concentration for CBSE you indirectly preparing for IPU CET 2017.

Ques. What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. In Chemistry, I had a good knowledge about the inorganic and physical chemistry while organic chemistry was my weakness. NCERT is the best book for practicing and learning chemistry. So I read NCERT book for chemistry thoroughly. It helped me to overcome my weakness and get well verse with the topics of organic chemistry.
I practiced only important topics in physics as it was the subject about which I had the maximum confidence. In maths I practiced Rd Sharma with complete ncert to master all topics.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. There are many mock tests available online as well as in the market but I personally preferred Arihant Mock tests. I appeared for Narayana Coaching Test when I joined the coaching classes. But I regret joining the coaching classes as I could have devoted that time to study on my own. That would have improved my rank further to get a better branch of my choice.

Ques. Write some of the preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. If your target is IPU CET then I would recommend u to go through NCERT fully as there a large number of NCERT based questions or you can say very easy conceptual questions. Follow SL Arora for Physics and revise NCERT book for better preparations. NCERT book is the best for Chemistry preparations. However, for maths you have to get all the concepts clear and practice miscellaneous questions from ncert exemplar.

Ques. Physics: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section.

Ans. As I have told before, according to me NCERT is the Bible for the preparations. Solve physics NCERT and then follow the other reference books to build up good control on the important topics. The reference books would be SL Arora and Arihant mock test book.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section.

Ans. The maximum numerical questions from Chemistry are based on the physical chemistry. There are conceptual questions based on organic and inorganic chemistry in IPU CET. Practice from NCERT and revise all the concepts from it. Arihant mock test is the reference book

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the strategy and books followed for this section.

Ans. Mathematics is the subject that requires maximum practice. The basic concepts must be cleared from the NCERT books while RD Sharma can be followed for high order thinking skills questions.

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. I would definitely go back and bring back the time that I wasted in coaching classes, long and tiring classes with no results. I would recommend that if you don’t understand anything then don’t waste your time for the sake of the fee paid.
