IIT JAM 2017: Exam Day Instructions & Last-minute Preparation Tips

    JAM or Joint Admission Test is an all India admission test conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Science (IISC) on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. IIT JAM is a gateway to get admitted to M.Sc. programme, joint PhD dual degree, and other post B.Sc. programmes at various IITs.

    IIT JAM 2017 will be conducted on February 12, 2017. The admit cards for IIT JAM are available for download since the January 10, 2017. The exam will be conducted in two sessions, with Biological Sciences (BL), Mathematics (MA) and Physics (PH) scheduled in the first session (9:00 AM. -12:00 PM). The second session includes Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG) and Mathematical Statistics (MS) being held from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

    With only a month left for the exam, it is only natural for the candidates to be on the edge. Even though you have started your preparation well-ahead, most of you might still be agitated. Fear not, for we bring some last-minute preparation tips, as well helpful exam day instructions. We assure you that these will help you excel your IIT JAM Exam.

    IIT JAM: Pre-Exam Instructions

    It is only common to be anxious during the day of exam and even the most brilliant of students are bound to make the silliest of mistakes due to a sudden wave of amnesia and restlessness. The following are a few tips to make sure you don’t commit any minor mistakes outside of the exam hall.

    • Find how far your exam centre is and take a trial tour of it.
    • Make a package comprising of the admit card, the original Photo ID you filled in the JAM 2017 Application Form, pens, pencils etc. and make sure not to take any other electronic gadgets like phone and calculator. Also, make sure there are no bits of papers.
    • Take extra copies of IIT JAM admit card.
    • Reach the venue at least an hour before the exam and stop reading notes or referring them a minimum of 10 minutes before the exam.

    Check for your seating arrangement and make sure you don’t indulge in any malpractice.

    IIT JAM: Exam Day Instructions

    Candidates must read the below instructions to be followed on exam day:

    • Candidates will be allowed to login and start reading the given exam instructions 20 minutes prior to the commencement of the actual exam.
    • Scribble pads will be provided to all the candidates for rough work.
    • Candidates must write their name and registration number on the scribble pad before they using it.
    • The scribble pad must be returned to the invigilator after examination

    To perform the mathematical calculations better during IIT JAM, authorities have introduced the Virtual Calculator. So that complex numerical questions can be solved quickly. The candidate must be well versed with the various functions and shortcuts for performing fast calculations and reaching at the final solution.

    IIT JAM: Exam Pattern

    IIT JAM 2017 is an online mode of examination with the duration being 3 hours. It consists of 3 sections. There are a total of 60 questions with a weightage of 100 marks. The three sections and their weightages are given below.

    The questions in Section A will have four different choices, of which only one will be correct. Questions in Section B will also have four choices, of which one or more answers may be correct. Full marks will be awarded only if all the correct choices are chosen. Section C consists of numerical questions which has signed real number as an answer. This answer is to be entered using virtual numeric keypad present on the monitor.

    In Section A, for questions having weightage of 1 mark, the candidate is awarded 1 mark for every correct answer and 1/3 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. For the questions carrying 2 marks for correct answer, 2/3 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. Section B and Section C have no negative marking and partial marking.

    IIT JAM: Last Minute Preparation Tips

    Your last-minute revision is as important as the preparation you have already done. Here we give you some last-minute prep tips that you can rely on.

    • Make a rough plan to cover up all the chapter (All the chapters should be covered)
    • Stick to it. No excuse. Nothing.
    • Take a standard book which is not so hard or not so easy. Average but most importantly in the trend.
    • Calculate the total time (in days) that you have before JAM. Let’s say it is T.
    1. Now prepare basics/fundamentals for T/4 days as per syllabus of your JAM paper.
    2. For next T/4 days revise basics/fundamentals and solve some problems on it from the book (same book that you used for basics).
    3. For next T/2 days solve previous year question papers.

    Tips to Write IIT Jam Exam

    To view the entire question paper, candidates must click “View All Questions Button” present in the screen. It is highly recommended that the candidate performs this action and plan the sequence of the sections and answer they to attend.

    • After reading the question paper, candidate must click on the section they wish to attempt.
    • Always save the answers after answering as the system will not save them.
    • Note the question numbers that you are unsure and wish to attempt later on the scribble pad. This will help you answer those questions when you are ready.
    • Answer all the questions that you are confident of and know the answers to.
    • Once finishing the questions that you are sure of, begin with the ones that you needed time to answer.
    • Numerical questions require a degree of precision so keep that in mind and do careful calculation.
    • Keep in mind not to spend too much time on a single question and move one with the other questions.
    • Make sure you complete answering questions before at least 10 minutes to the end of the exam and utilize those 10 minutes to check the answers once again.

    IIT JAM is considered as one of the hardest exams to crack. Methodical preparation and calculated answering will help crack the JAMS and help you get admitted in the leading Colleges of India. All the best to all the candidates.
