AP ICET 2018 Paper Analysis

There were three sections - Analytical Ability consisting of 75 questions, Mathematics section which had 75 questions and a section on Communication Ability with 50 questions. There was no negative marking.

SECTION 1: Analytical Ability

Data Sufficiency –

Like last year, questions from topic on Numbers dominated the section on Data Sufficiency. Other questions were from Mensuration, Profit – Loss, Coordinate Geometry, Equations, Indices and Surds, geometry & Averages. There was no reasoning based question in this section.

On the whole, the data sufficiency part can be rated as moderate, with 2/3rd of the questions being moderate to difficult. Some of the questions were tricky !!

Data Analysis –

This part had three sets – one set with 5 questions where the data was given in a pie diagram, another set with 3 questions where the where the data was presented in the form of table and third set with 2 questions where the data was presented in the form of table, but students need to draw a Venn diagram to solve this particular set.

As far as the set where data was given in a pie chart is concerned, the given data was easy to understand, the questions were not calculation based and less time consuming.

As regards the set based on data where the student had to draw a Venn diagram to solve the given questions – the questions were easy and involved less calculations.

Reasoning –

This area included questions on Problem Solving, Coding-Decoding and Date, Time and Arrangement. There were 10 questions from Number Series but no questions were asked from Letter Series. The questions on Analogies were based on numbers and letters. The difficulty level was moderate. Questions on Coding-Decoding were of two types, one was set based and the other type included individual questions.

Other question types were on Clocks, Blood Relations, Symbols & Notations were of easy-moderate difficulty level.

SECTION 2: Mathematical Ability

  • This section was time consuming and difficult. About 80% of the questions in this section were either moderate or difficult.
  • While there were few questions which could be solved by direct substitution using the formulae, there were lot of questions which were purely based on the application of the concepts rather that direct substitution in the formulae types. There were ywo new question types that were asked in Pure Maths – SD of discrete series, quadratic equation, where the roots were trigonometric functions.
  • Over all, the section on Mathematical Ability in AP ICET2018 was MODERATE- DIFFICULT.

SECTION 3: Communication Ability

To begin with, the paper was along expected lines – there were no surprise elements and the pattern was a reflection of the previous years.

A brief analysis of each area of the English component is mentioned below.

Vocabulary –

There were six questions in this section of easy difficulty level. The question types were fill in the blanks and word substitute.

Functional Grammar

A total of 15 questions were asked in this section out of which 7 were on Statements/Conversation and eight were on filling the blanks with suitable verb/phrase/preposition. The candidates with knowledge of phrasal verb and usage of preposition would have found this section easy. Overall difficulty level of this section can be considered easy to moderate.

Reading Comprehension –

There were three passages with 15 questions. The passages were easily comprehensible and questions were direct. The passages were of 200 to 300 words.

SECTION 4: Computer and Business Terminology

Out of the six questions that were asked on Computers, two of the questions were NOT on expected lines. Two questions were moderate (tricky as well) and two were easy. While the questions on DOS ( full form of DOS) and FORTRAN (Full form) were easy, the questions on optic fibre and saving back up in a systematic manner, would have appeared to be slightly confusing to the students

As regards the questions from Business Terminology there were four question, one of them was easy and three were of moderate difficult level.
