TOEFL is an exam taken by most of the non-native English test takers who want to pursue higher education from foreign nations. Other than IELTS, test takers prefer writing TOEFL for its academic approach. In most of the top universities of the world, TOEFL and IELTS seem to be a mandatory admission requirement. In most universities of USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, TOEFL score is a mandatory requirement for undergraduate admissions. In most universities of USA, the average TOEFL score varies 90-95. There are no such passing marks for TOEFL but this range is considered good for taking admissions in USA and Canada. Like undergraduate application, TOEFL score is required for graduate application as well. Applicants must go through required scores to take admission in a particular university studying a particular subject. This language proficiency score is required for those applicants who have studied undergraduate in native language other than English. Top universities exempt TOEFL scores only for those who have studied undergraduate degrees from English speaking nation. Usually for graduate courses, universities require a score above 20 in each component of TOEFL. Speaking proficiency is also one of the most important components to look at. Other than undergraduate and graduate programs, applicants require TOEFL score to take admissions in top business schools. Most business schools in Canada and USA require TOEFL as standard admission requirement for language proficiency. In the top business schools of USA, applicants should have scored 100 in TOEFL iBT and around 600 in TOEFL PBT. These scores vary every year as per requirement. Top b-schools like Harvard Business School consider TOEFL score as admission requirement only. According to data surveyed by ETS, average score required in business schools for MBA programs are 22 in Reading, 22 in Listening, 21 in Speaking and 22 in Writing.
As per data collected from ETS, it is noticed that Male test takers perform better in Reading and Listening section of TOEFL. As compared to other components, both male and female test takers score the least in writing. Such least scores in a particular band is due to academic practice. Studying in native languages, many test takers fail to articulate pragmatic reasons through writing. One needs to be critically strong enough to put those in words. ETS designs TOEFL Scholarship program for those who want to study abroad after qualifying for a language proficiency exam. This initiative is taken by ETS to help those meritorious test takers who fail to study abroad due to the financial crisis. ETS listed around 9000 educational institutions located around the world in 130 countries. Every year around 15 merit scholarships are available for test takers worth $7000 each. This scholarship is only available to those test takers who excel in TOEFL. Other eligibility criteria required for TOEFL Scholarship are as follows
100 candidates will be selected on the basis of the above mentioned parameters. Then in another round of screening only those candidates will be eligible for TOEFL scholarship who will excel in communication skills along with academic scores.
