CLAT 2019 – Way to a Glorious Career

Law is a very respectable and valuable profession. The aspiration to enter this field could either be drawn from the family, fictional actors (Harvey Specter from Suits or Perry Mason) or they might really want to make a difference in the society.

Each day the Government introduces new rules and regulations, it becomes necessary for an individual or for any big corporate house to have a legal advisor. Hence, it has become one of the most popular career choices in our country.

To be a good law practitioner, one needs to study from a quality institute. Thankfully, India has some great law colleges. The major one of these are National Law Universities, or the NLUs, which offer admission through a test called Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

About CLAT 2019:
CLAT 2019 will be conducted by NLU Odisha, Cuttack on May 12, 2018 (tentatively). CLAT 2019 Application Forms will be released in the month of January 2019 at www.clat.ac.in. The application fee is INR 4000

What is CLAT?

CLAT, acronym for Common Law Admission Test, is a national level law entrance examination. Admissions to LLB and LLM programs are offered in Indian Universities via CLAT Scores. The examination is conducted annually on a rotational basis by 19 NLUs.

  • CLAT is an online mode (computer-based) paper.
  • As per revised rules, there is no upper age limit for CLAT 2019.
  • The questions paper consists of 200 Questions in LLB and 150 Questions in LLM
  • One mark will be awarded for every correct response
  • The negative marking is also applicable, 0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer​

Career Opportunities after CLAT

After knowing what is CLAT, here comes the big question,” What career opportunities will I have after CLAT?” The simplest answer is that with a good CLAT score you can get admission in some of the best law institutes and after completing your degree, you can explore various career options.

The career options available after studying law are as follows: -

Job in Law firms

There are a number of law firms in India which hire students from campuses as well. These are organizations of lawyers which offers expertise in the field of law under a common brand name. Some of the biggest law firms in India are AZB & partners, J Sagar Associates, Khaitan and Company, Luthra & Luthra Law offices and Trilegal. Working with these firms not only will give you a handsome amount of salary but will provide you a lot of exposure.

With these firms, you can work with great minds in the field of law and will thus enhance your knowledge as well. Sometimes, the starting packages can go as high as INR 12 lakhs.

Litigation/Practice

Another very prevalent career opportunity is litigation. This simply means acting as a lawyer yourself and present cases of clients in courts and tribunals. Hiring a lawyer is necessary for a common man to fight any case in the court and thus this profession has unlimited scope.

To be eligible for practicing law, you need to be enrolled with state/central bar council and you will also need to clear the examination of Bar Council of India. This profession has no fixed income but if you do well, you can earn a lot of respect along with good amount of money as well.

Teaching/Lectureship

With growing demand of law practitioners, there is natural increase in demand of law teachers and professors as well. If you possess the proper knowledge and are willing to teach, then this is really an attractive profession.

Being a teacher gives a lot of advantages, first is that you get fixed working hours. Secondly, you interact with new minds, their thinking and ideas make you more dynamic person. Thirdly, college lectures are paid a very handsome salary. And lastly, teaching is a very noble profession; it has its own kind of respect inherited in it which is amazing. Thus, this is another beautiful career path which you choose.

PSU/Banking/Corporate Sector Jobs

The size of organizations and their self-reliance is increasing rapidly. Therefore, almost all big firms these days have their own legal departments and are keen to hire the best minds in law. The work in such Banks, Public Sector Units and Corporate Organizations can be anywhere from handling routine nature tasks to big events like mergers & acquisitions.

PSUs and Banks do a give a handsome starting salary of 25,000 to 40,000 per month. In private sector, your starting salary may not be as high as PSUs but a good growth can be achieved in these. Thus, this is another great option for studying law.

Indian Corporate Law Services

This is another prestigious career option available after completing your law degree. It is a regulatory law service of Government of India. This is a job under Central Civil Services (Group A) and works under Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

To get a job under Indian Corporate Law Services, one has to clear the Civil Services Examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission. However, one can also clear the exam of State Level Service Commission to get such a job under state government. This is a highly respectable job and stands amongst one of the most sought-after career options after completing a law degree.

Judiciary

The last and again a very obvious career option is becoming a judge. One can become a judge by clearing State Level Judiciary Exams. The law graduates who clear this exam are generally appointed as entry-level judges in various courts. If everything goes well, one can also become a High Court judge after some years of experience.

Sometimes, advocates who have been practicing for a long time are also directly appointed as judges. This is another method of entering into judiciary but might take a long time.

The career options after law are endless. But for this, one needs to get admission into top-level law colleges by clearing their respective exam. CLAT does offer admission into the best law institutes of the country, therefore, one should prepare hard and get maximum score possible.
