The interview process generally lasts for a week.

SSB contains three tests which are categorized as screening, physiological and group test. Group tests consist of various tests namely Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise (Military Planning Exercise), Progressive Group task and many more.

What is Progressive Group Task?

Progressive Group Task (PGT) is the heart of the group testing task series. It is very simple and fun task which helps in unwrapping the qualities lying inside an individual.

These group exercises are formed in such a way that they test the ability of candidates to perform in a team and how they face the problems practically.

The groups are formed without any team leader so that the entire group should work with an essence of cooperation. The exercises are simple and there are many numbers of solutions for them so all the candidates should be focused and think with a calm nerve before coming up for a solution.

The whole exercise lasts up to 40 to 45 minutes starting with most easy tasks and ending with difficult ones. All the exercises are supervised under an officer (GTO). In this task the candidates are required to cross the start and finish lines carrying a load with supporting material.

The GTO explains in all the instructions before the commencement of the task and also informs about structures or materials not to be touched and the areas out of bound. He then handles them a wooden plank, pole and ropes which should be used to pass through the obstacles. Once the candidates complete these obstacles he is taken to another one and the task continues till the last exercise.

However, there are certain rules which candidates should follow during PGT.

Rules of Progressive Group Task:

  • The first is the colour rule. The structures are painted in mainly three different colours red, white and blue. White- both, candidates and helping material can be touched. Blue- ONLY candidate can be touched, helping material cannot. Red-  out of bounds for both candidates and the helping material.
  • The second rule is rigidity rule it states that two rigid helping materials cannot be tied together however they can be tied with the structures.
  • The third is the rule of infinity according to which the starting and finishing line of obstacle can extend till infinity. These lines cannot be crossed by a group directly.
  • The fourth rule is distance rule it states that gap more than four feet cannot be jumped, it should be bridged using the helping material.
  • The fifth rule is group and load rule according to which the entire group along with load and helping material should move together at any given time throughout the entire course of PGT.

There is as such no preparation required for PGT. The exercises of PGT are very easy and they are to test your instincts and your role and contribution in a team. One needs to be calm and focused before starting the task. Just remember these four don’ts and you can surely pass all the obstacles of PGT. Don’t criticize, don’t shout, don’t break the rules and most importantly don’t give up keep trying.

All the best!!
