    How to score higher in IELTS Reading?

    Although it's called a reading test, it's not really a reading test, but it's a test to evaluate your reading skills like skimming, scanning, and reading skills Here are a few tips that will help you develop your reading ability for a higher score in the reading section of the IELTS exam

    • Skim and Scan

    This cannot be stressed more but rather than reading big chunks of large paragraphs, it is advised to skim and scan through the paragraph to do well in IELTS. Skimming is also known as going through the paragraph by reading it quickly to get the gist of the content. It is highly recommended before you start solving the questions. To get a sense of the topic and layout of the paragraph, it is advised that you should not spend more than 2 to 3 minutes n skimming the content. At the same time, take out all the important information or keyword that find and can use later. A common type of question that comes before passage which generally is ‘match the heading’ type for which you don’t need an in-depth detailed read. Scanning is in which you can locate the important information that you just skimmed from the paragraph to answer your questions. Both the techniques if used wisely can help score better in the IELTS reading section.

    • Focus On Increasing Your Reading Speed

    As you know, the reading section of the IELTS exam comes with a time limit which can be a huge problem to tackle if you have a slow reading speed. You must develop good reading speed so as to find the answers easily from paragraphs. This implies you should know how to skim and scan easily and quickly through the given content.

    • It Is Not Necessary To Understand The Whole Passage

    Some of the candidates might get stuck in the whims and fancies of the paragraph given as questions in IELTS. Your work is to extract only the important information from the paragraph and not to understand the whole passage. Also, many questions aimed at judging your answer finding abilities, so it is important for you to know the specific information rather than comprehending or summarizing the whole paragraph. 

    • Develop Rich Vocabulary

    Every question asked in the IELTS exam has keywords in them that help you find answers to the questions easily. You must know how to find keywords and use them to find answers. Paraphrasing the keywords is also an important way you can use to answer questions. The keywords are basically of 2 types such as easy to locate keywords which include dates, names, places, etc and more deep and hidden keywords such as a personality trait of a character in the paragraph.

    • Grammar

    There are questions in which you’ll be required to complete sentences or do a summary completion that requires you to have perfect grammar so as to fit the answers in the right manner. Knowing the basic grammar rules and bringing them into practice is what candidates must do.

    • Practice More And More

    In order to improve, you need to practice consistently and thoroughly. Consult online reading lessons in order to improve your reading abilities. Practicing each day for 2-3 hours every day can help a lot. Also, developing a reading habit can help you in the long run as well. 

    • Be Ready To Tackle Difficult Passages

    If you want to solve questions easily and in an effective manner, you should be familiar with complicated passages. If you have a habit of reading content that includes intricate and varied details in it, you will be able to perform your task more effectively and with ease. Try reading editorials from newspapers. 

    General Preparation Tips for IELTS

    • Time Management 

    Time management is the way to accomplish good grades. The test has 40 questions in three sections which should be finished in an hour. It is advised that you ought not to go through over a minute on each question however actually you may need to give more time for specific questions. This can create tension if not planned wisely. 

    • Carefully read the questions first 

    A few candidates first go through the questions to get an idea on which the questions depend on. This can likewise be used as a strategy in addressing the answers. 

    • Responding to the Questions
