SSC Stenographer Grade C and D: Job Profile, Salary, Promotions and Career Path

Staff Selection Commission(SSC) recently conducted the online computer-based test for the post of Stenographer (Grade 'C' and 'D'). The exam was scheduled from September 11 to September 14, 2017. Candidates who have cleared the Class 12 examination were eligible to apply for SSC Stenographer 2017.

  • This recruitment is released and conducted by Staff Selection Commission to recruit candidates for around 354 vacancies of Stenographer Grade “C” and Stenographer Grade “D” under Ministries/Departments of Central Government and Subordinate offices located all over the country.
  • SSC conducts a Computer Based Examination for Recruitment of Stenographer Grade “C” (Group B Non-gazetted) and Stenographer Grade “D”(Group “C” Non-Gazetted) in the month of September 2017.
  • Candidates who will clear the written test will be called for the Skill test in the month of December/January to test their skill sets in various domains.
  • Those who get selected through SSC Stenographer 2017 exam will be appointed in various ministries/departments of Central Government to the post of Stenographer Grade C and D.

Job Profile

Stenographers’ work profile will depend upon his/her Grade and where he/she is posted.

Grade C Stenographers are posted in Ministries/Departments of Central Government, located mostly in Delhi while Grade D Stenographers are categorized in two groups as under:

  • Group 'X' - For Departments of Central Government located mostly in Delhi.
  • Group ‘Y’ - For Departments of Central Government including all over the country.

The duties and responsibilities of the Stenographer will be:

  • Speech Writing
  • Press Conference Briefings
  • Assisting the Minister or Officer
  • Helping in Public Relations

A Stenographer has a proper work schedule. He/she has to work daily during the government office hours, no extra work hours and working in shifts. 

Besides these works, the duties include assisting with phone calls, dealing with visitors, handling of official documents and files, fixing appointments, arranging meetings, maintaining the diary, liaison within and outside the office, arranging travel related matters, etc.

SSC Stenographer Grade C Salary and Allowances

All the Stenographer Grade C candidates will be posted in Ministries/Departments of Central Government.

SSC Stenographer Grade D Salary and Allowances

Group D Candidates will be posted in two subgroups X and Y. Where X group will get posting in Departments of Central Government located mostly in Delhi and Group Y will get in Departments of Central Government including all over the country.

Apart from the salary, SSC Stenographers will also be entitled to receive various allowances. These allowances are:

  • DA on Total Pay above
  • Transport Allowance
  • House Rent Allowance

According to current pay scales, the selected candidate would get a salary of around INR 23,000 p/m initially (can vary a little as per place of posting).
