"Attentive and focused mind plays important role in your victory” – Says Piyush Pratap Singh (UPSEE Topper)
Piyush appeared for UPSEE in 2004. He scored 61% in it and admission in Indraprastha Engineering College. We interviewed him and he shared some of his strategies and preparation tips. Here given below is the questionnaire with him. It may help you to prepare UPSEE to some extent.
Ques. Which Institutions offered you admission?
Ans. Madan Mohan Malviya University of Technology, Gorakhpur & Indraprastha Engineering College.
Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did they help you to prepare better?
Ans. I did my 12th in 2004, after that, I started preparing for IIT in Kota, Rajasthan. At that time, Engineering was like madness, and Kota is like mini India. I prepared my coaching from Bansal classes and secured IIT PRE also. After that, I cleared Vellore Institute of Technology also.
But that was too far, so I got admission in Indraprastha Engineering College. At that time it was in top 10 in UP. In coaching classes, they exactly teach you which is necessary, so to give your knowledge a direction and change your thinking.
It was a nice experience. But these days many institutes are there and many of them have no experience. So check the history and faculty before getting admission into institutes. Be on time, don’t be late so you get admission on time.

Ques. How would you rate the following preparation strategy in terms of their efficiency in your story?
|Coaching Classes||NCERT Text Books||Coaching Study Material||Online Study Material||Subject Wise Classes||Self-Study|
Ques. Rate the role of Coaching Institutes in cracking UPSEE.
Ques. How did you manage UPSEE Preparation along with your class 12th exam?
Ans. UPSEE preparation is not a rocket science, you can prepare it with 12 schools. It doesn't take much time but takes lots of attention. Only focus on the main subject, solve last year question papers. Focus on core subjects like Chemistry and Mathematics.
Ques. What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?
Ans. My strong subjects were Chemistry and Mathematics and I was good in subjective so it was easy to solve objective questions also. I would say only your hard work pays you back.
Ques. What mock papers did you take?
Ans. I took only coaching classes mock tests.
Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?
Ans. First thing is to focus on concepts. It is not necessary that you finish the whole syllabus, but it’s necessary you finish the important topics. And practice them with last years’ question papers.
Take a watch and solve last years’ papers like an exam, so it comes in your habit and all fear will go soon. These days online mock test are available subject wise so you can study in a day time and give mock tests in the evenings. And they show result quickly with the explanation of answers.
Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.
Ans. For physics lots of books are there but try to make class notes and don't try to read many books, you will only get confused and nothing else. For physics NCERT books are good and you can choose few IIT Books for preparation like IIT Physics by Khanna. But your class notes give you more strength than anything else.
Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section
Ans. There are 3 parts in Chemistry: Organic, Inorganic and Physical. Organic chemistry requires more practice as it is scoring and it is the main part of chemistry. You can follow books of organic chemistry by Dr. O.P. Tondon and IIT chemistry for JEE by Khanna. Class Notes plays very important role.
Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.
Ans. For Mathematics there are many books. Maths is scoring subject and it needs lots of practice, and there is no shortcut for Maths.
But Katariyas Katson maths is good and for practice IIT preparation books are good. You can solve last years’ UPSEE Sample Papers, books of Arihant also good but don't trust answers of Arihant. Rest CBSE class books also sufficient.
Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?
Ans. At the time of counseling, choosing a good college is a real must. Because when you get admission and complete your studies, many things change. So, college plays an important role in placement. Select college on the basis of last years’ record such as placement records and etc. If I would be given any chance to do so, I would have selected Government College.
