IES Exam Analysis 2017

Union Public Service Commission conducted IES 2017 (Prelims) on January 8. Engineering aspirants were surprised with the exam level as they felt that it was tough and wide as compared to last two years. There were two papers, conducted in different sessions. Highlights of IES 2017 are as follows:

IES 2017 Paper I Analysis

IES Prelims Paper I was conducted in the morning session (9 am to 11 am). Candidates were taken aback with the type of questions that were asked in the examination.

As per the analysis, listed below are the important points informing about the level and type of questions that were asked in IES 2017 Paper 1:

  • Basics of Material Science and Engineering carried the most weightage i.e. 18 questions were asked from this topic. Also, the questions were very difficult.
  • Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis had the easiest questions in the entire examination. One can score full marks from this section.
  • Current issues of National and International importance relating to Social, Economic and Industrial development, had 7 questions in total. The best part about this was no questions were asked from international issues.

IES 2017 Paper II Analysis

  • Paper II of IES Prelims is different for the different engineering disciplines.
  • There was separate paper for Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Paper of all the engineering discipline was bit lengthy.
  • There was total of 150 questions of 300 marks.
  • All questions were calculative in nature.
  • Paper II was tougher than the previous year.

What next after IES 2017 Paper I?

Candidates who qualify IES Prelims will have to appear for IES Mains 2017. Shortlisted candidates from IES Mains will then be called for personal interview session for final recruitment.

Listed below is a brief about the IES Selection Procedure: 

IES Examination constitutes the following 3 stages carries a total of 1300 Marks:

  • Stage 1: Preliminary Exam (500 marks)
  • Stage 2: Mains Exam (600 marks)
  • Stage 3: Personality Test (200 marks)

Stage 1: Preliminary Exam

Preliminary Exam is Objective type and consist of 2 papers which will be conducted in different sessions.

  • Paper-I General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper which carries a total of 100 Questions (200 Marks) and duration of the exam is 2 Hours. 
  • Paper-II is Engineering Discipline Paper which carries a total of 150 Questions (300 Marks) and duration of the paper is 3 Hours.
  • Only candidates who will clear the cut off of Preliminary Exam will be eligible for Stage 2.

Stage 2: Mains Exam

  • Mains Exam is the subjective/conventional type and consist of 2 papers which will be conducted in different sessions.
  • Paper-1 and Paper-2 are of Engineering Discipline.
  • Engineering Discipline Paper-1 and Paper-2 carry a total of 5 to 8 Question (300 Marks) each, and duration of both the paper is 6 Hours.
  • Candidates who will qualify the Stage-1 and Stage-2 will be eligible for Stage 3.

Stage 3: Personality Test

  • Candidates shortlisted after IES Mains round will be called for personal interview session officially known as ‘Personality Test’ round.
  • A maximum of 200 marks is allotted to the personality test (interview test).

CheckPreparation Tips for Interview Round

The final results will be declared after preparing a Merit list based on candidate’s performance in each round. Top candidates in the merit list will be given an appointment letter and would be recruited in Engineering Services through UPSC IES.
