IES Exam Pattern for ME (Mechanical Engineering)

IES (Indian Engineering Service) Exam is a paper-pen based, four-part government service examination directed by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for recruitment of engineers in the Engineering Services of the Government of India. IES 2017 exam is conducted for recruitment of engineers in government services/sectors of-

  • Railways
  • Roadways
  • Defense
  • Energy and telecommunication

Any graduate engineer can apply for ESE (Engineering Service Examination) 2017. IES Exam Pattern is designed as a combined four stage examination that consists of six tests. Each test is qualifying in nature as such engineering aspirants need to clear each test in order to be selected as IES officer as per the recommendations of the UPSC.

As far as the question of whether, IES Exam is easy or tough?  Indian Engineering Service examination is also considered as the toughest examination in India and also counted among the toughest exams in the world due to two reasons mainly-

  • The disparity in terms of number of aspirants and offered posts
  • Its technical nature.

Most toppers of this ESE are graduates of institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science. The career of an IES officer is highly respected due to its diverse areas of work. To the Indian Government an IES officer is an important link in the government's task and functions that include railways, roads, defense, manufacturing, inspection, supply, construction, public works, power, telecommunications, etc. All appointments to the Group "A" services are made by the President of India.

IES 2017 ME Areas of Opportunities

IES exam takes place over the course of 3 days. The exam consists of 2 sections. Section 1 is an objective type paper and section 2 is a conventional subjective type exam. Both papers cover entire syllabus of relevant engineering disciplines. The objective exam is held over the course of two days. There is negative marking for the objective section of the paper.

  • Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, climate change, environmental impact assessment.
  • Basics of Project Management.
  • Basics of Material Science and Engineering.
  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance and technology based education.
  • Ethics and values in Engineering profession.

IES Preliminary/ Stage 1 Exam Pattern (objective type Papers)

  • IES Exam Pattern for preliminary examination is same for all the streams in the IES.
  • This stage consists of 2 papers- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper and Engineering Discipline Paper. These are conducted on two different sessions.
  • Questions in IES Prelims are objective in nature.
  • The distribution of marks is 200+300 (500 marks).
  • The duration of these papers is 2 hours (paper 1) and 3 hours (paper 2) in IES Prelims.

IES Mains/ Stage 2 Exam Pattern (Subjective Type Papers)

  • IES Mains consists of 2 papers that are subjective in nature and are conducted in different sessions.
  • Both papers are Engineering Discipline.
  • The distribution of marks for both the papers is IES is 300+300 (600 marks).
  • The duration of both these papers is 3 hours each.
  • The paper pattern for IES Mains only involves the change in the type of questions.

IES 2017 Final Stage for Selection: Interview

Candidates who qualify in the written exam are then required to appear in Personality Test and Personal Interview, which carries 200 marks. Officially labeled as the "Personality Test", the objective of the interview is to assess-

  • Suitability of the candidate for a career in public service.
  • Judges the mental aptitude, intellectual qualities, social knowledge and current affairs knowledge of the candidate.
  • Character of the individual is also assessed.

The marks of the interview round are added to the marks obtained by the candidate in the written round.
