IES Prelims Cut Offs by UPSC (2014 – 2017)

The Union Public Services Commission conducts IES Exam to recruit eligible candidates in various department of Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication, and Mechanical disciplines. UPSC decides IES Cutoff at each stage to shortlist candidates for next phase of selection process.

  • As per the commission, cut off for qualifying preliminary exam is set to 15% i.e. 75 out of 500 for General category. Based on this cutoff, UPSC calls eligible candidates for IES Main examination. Candidates satisfying cut off for IES prelims will proceed to IES Mains, scheduled for July 1.
  • UPSC has set IES Mains Cut Off to 20% of the total marks. Candidates qualifying the same will then be called for interview session.
  • The final merit list is prepared after adding the marks of candidates in the UPSC Prelims, Mains and the Personality Test i.e. Interview.

Types of IES Cut Off

The cut off for the engineering examination is released separately for all the stages. Listed below are the types of cut off in IES:

IES Cut off of Prelims

  • UPSC has fixed the minimum qualifying marks for candidates participating in IES Prelim Examination.
  • General, OBC, SC, and ST candidates will have to secure 15% of the total marks.
  • Physically Handicapped candidates, have to obtain 10% of the total marks in two papers to be eligible for IES Main examination.

IES Cut off for Mains

  • General, OBC, SC, and ST candidates will have to secure 20% of the total marks (120 out of 600)
  • Physically Handicapped candidates, have to obtain 10% (60 out 600) of the total marks to qualify for IES Personal Interview Round.

IES Final Cut off

  • After the conclusion of IES Personality Test/ Interview, UPSC releases the list of selected candidates along with their score.
  • Based on the vacancies and performance of candidates, final cut off varies.
  • The UPSC calls twice the number of candidates as per vacancies.

Expected IES 2018 Cut off

The official cut off is released by the conducting body after the declaration of IES Results. Until then, candidates can go through the following table to get an idea about the expected IES 2018 Cut Off. This cutoff is prepared after thorough observation of the previous years cut off and is released by the reputed coaching centers, educational portals, and educational experts. This is just for reference purpose and will play no role in the selection procedure of IES 2018.

IES Preliminary Exam Cut off

UPSC decides IES cut off for preliminary exams in two stages, minimum qualifying score needed to be shortlisted and the score of the last qualified candidate selected. Given below is the score of the last qualified candidate selected for IES Mains in each discipline over the last four years.

IES Prelims Cut off for Civil Engineering

  • Prelims cut off for Civil Engineering for General Category is same in the year 2014 and 2017.
  • However, cut off for reserved category has comparatively decreased.
  • Cut off in 2015 was very high as compared to other years.

IES Prelims Cut off for Electrical Engineering

Prelims cut off in 2016 was the highest in all categories but have decreased to the lowest in 2017. As we can see cut off for Electrical engineering is above 250(50%) every year and is going as high as 320(almost 65% of the total marks) in 2016. Based on the trend we can expect a high cut off this year too.


IES Prelims Cut off for Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

  • Cut off for ECE was more than 60% in the year 2014, 2015, and 2016 but decreased to almost 40% in the year 2017 for general category candidates.
  • Based on the previous years tally, we can expect a cut off in the range of 40-45% this year for General candidates and around 35-40 for reserved category.

IES Prelims Cut off for Mechanical Engineering

  • Cut off for Mechanical Engineering was more than 60% in the year 2016 and almost the same(55%) in the year 2014 and 2015 for all categories.
  • However, the cut of decreased to low of 45% in the year 2017 for general category candidates.
  • Based on the previous years tally, we can expect a cut off in the range of 45-60% this year for General candidates and around 45-55% for reserved category candidates.

  • UPSC will upload the cut off of each round in a single PDF file.
  • Candidates can check the cut off as per category and choice of engineering discipline.
