How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude in SSC CHSL

SSC CHSL Tier 1 exams have been announced to be held from March 4, 2018 to March 26, 2018. Last date to register for this exam is December 27, 2017. It is one of the most sought-after exams for those who pass class 12. Tier 1 of SSC CHSL 2017 comprise 4 sections- General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language.

Only few months are left for SSC CHSL exam. Level of competition is high in this exam as the number of aspirants for this exam is huge. In order to stand out, it is important to make use of strengths and work on weak points when it comes to exam preparations.

SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam Pattern

Quantitative Aptitude is the only section in which students can score full 50 marks if prepared well. Students have to keep calculations and formulae correct in order to avoid any mistakes in this section. It is must to know the analysis of SSC CHSL QA section of previous years.

  • Time, Work & Wages: The level of questions was basic whereas there was a difference in type of questions in different shifts. All types of questions of basic level have to be practiced
  • Percentages: Level of questions were both easy and difficult. In some shifts the questions were very difficult therefore this topic needs to be prepared in depth.
  • Profit, Loss & Discount: Most of the questions were based on formula. Keep in mind all the formulas and short cuts to solve questions quickly.
  • SI - CI: Questions were not difficult but calculative.
  • Geometry: Most of the questions were based on triangle and circles. But still do not leave any part of this topic.
  • Time, Speed & Distance: The level of questions was average. Keeping concepts clear for this topic is very important. Avoid calculation mistakes.
  • Ratio & Proportion: Questions were based on concepts. Proper revision of methods used in calculation of Ratio and Proportions will help you solve the questions with least mistakes.
  • Algebra: It has questions on Algebraic Identities, Factorization & Simplification of Polynomials and Simplification of Fractions.
  • Simplification: Questions were based on inequality.
  • Coordinate Geometry: Questions were based on basic concepts like reflection point, mirror image, equation of the line, area between given lines, slope, shortest distance, collinear etc. It is the easiest topic of all if concepts are clear.
  • Average: Questions based on run and wickets in most of the shifts.

Important Tips to Improve Speed for SSC CHSL QA Section

  • Identify 15 questions in the QA section and try to solve them with 100% accuracy.
  • Ideal time to solve per question should be not more than 45 seconds.
  • There is no sectional cut off so try to solve as many questions in this as possible.
  • Attempt at least 22-23 questions in this section to get 18-20 questions correct. This will be around 90% accuracy for the section.
  • Focus more on calculations to avoid silly mistakes.

Students should focus on the main concepts of elementary schools. It is important to understand the basics of each topic in QA. Majorly the questions asked in SSC CHSL QA exam are from the tenth class textbooks.

  • Learn formulas of squares, cubes, square root etc. This will help to save time while solving the questions.
  • Tables up to 40 should be learnt by heart.
  • Do not learn many short tricks for the same type of question as it be confusing and one wastes time in choosing methods.
  • Learn applications of short tricks and keep in mind those questions for which such tricks are not applicable.
  • Study the entire syllabus of QA and do not skip any topic. Questions can be asked from any topic.
  • Identify chapters you are good at and solve all different type questions from such chapters.
  • Practice as many previous year papers as possible.
  • Do not waste much time on a single question.
  • Keep place to do rough calculations in the exam.

There are many books for SSC CHSL Quant preparation in the market. Do not purchase multiple books. It is better to practice one book thousand times rather than practicing a thousand books one time.
