NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE/OFFLINE TEST
SSC CHSL is conducted in three tiers- Tier 1 (Objective Test), Tier 2 (Descriptive Test) and Tier 3 (Skill Test). Candidates who clear SSC CHSL Cut Off are asked to appear for skill test/typing test.
For candidates interested in Data Entry Operator (DEO) post will have to appear for skill test, while candidates who applied for Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and postal assistant posts through SSC CHSL 2017 will undergo a typing test.
There are certain relaxations for PH/OH candidates. Such candidates are given 35 minutes to complete the test. Also in some cases Passage Dictators are allowed if notified previously.
Skill Test (DEST) is qualifying in nature, score obtained in this phase are not included while preparing final merit list. The skill test examines applicants’ speed to apply 8,000 key depressions per hour on the computer.
The speed will be checked by providing candidates with printed matter in English which must be typed within the stipulated time period. The test is of 15 minutes and candidates should have a minimum speed of 2000-2200 strokes/key-depressions in order to qualify. Also, candidates will have to pass typing test in MS office as well.
Note that, key depressions/strokes are the number of keys candidate presses in the given time. In 15 minutes time, candidates have to press 2000-2200 keys (right words only).
For visually handicapped candidates, 35 minutes will be given to undertake the skill test.
Skill test is mandatory for every candidate including PH candidates as it is a precondition for the appointment to the post of Data Entry Operator (DEO).
Candidates applying for the posts of Lower Division Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant must appear for the typing test. The test will be conducted only in English or Hindi language. The medium choice will have to be made at the time of filling SSC CHSL Application Form.
Those who opt for English medium should have the typing speed of 35 words per minute and those opting for Hindi medium should have the typing speed of 30 words per minute. Therefore, 35 words per minute correspond to 10,500 key depressions per hour while 30 words per minute correspond to 9000 key depressions per hour.
Candidates will be given 10 minutes’ time to type the given text, hence, they will be adjudged of their accuracy of typing on the computer.
Visually Handicapped candidates (with 40% disability and above) will be allowed 30 minutes. In English, the passage to be typed in 10 minutes has 1750 key depressions and in Hindi, it has 900.
