UGC NET 2019or University Grant Commission’s National Eligibility Test is held to select candidates for Assistant Professor positions and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) at Indian Universities and Colleges. The exam is conducted by CBSE bi-annually, in the offline mode, on behalf of UGC in multiple subjects. The official notification for UGC NET 2019 will be released by CBSE on the official website, in due course. In this article, we elaborate on the salient features of the exam, based on past records, for a better understanding of interested aspirants.

UGC NET 2019 will be conducted in 84 subjects at 91 selected UGC NET 2019 exam centers across India.The exam is expected to be held twice, in January 2019 and July 2019 as per the previous trends. But, in the year 2017, certain changes were introduced by CBSE due to large absenteeism of students in the exam. As per the directives of CBSE, UGC NET 2017 was held just once in the year, i.e. on November 05, 2017. The same trend is expected to continue in 2018 as well and the exam will rather take place in July 2018.

  • The official notification for UGC NET 2019 exam January session is expected to release in September 2018. 
  • UGC NET Application Form 2019 for January session will be made available from October-November 2018. 
  • The application process will take place in the online mode, accessible at www.cbsenet.nic.in.
  • The exam will be conducted in three separate sessions. Candidates will be selected for JRF or Assistant Professorship based on their performace in the 2 papers. 
  • There will be a total of 150 objective questions to be completed in 3 hours. Check UGC NET Exam Pattern 
  • Candidates can avail their UGC NET Admit Card in December 2018.
  • Answer key and OMR sheet will be released in March 2019 which will enable candidates to have a fair idea of their results. 
  • UGC NET Result 2019 will be released in May 2019. 
  • Only 6% of the total candidates qualifying UGC NET 2019 will be declared eligible for Assistant Professorship.
  • Approximately, 6 lakh candidates are reported to have appeared for UGC NET, in a year.

UGC NET 2019 Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for UGC NET, as specified by UGC in the context of candidate’s age and academic qualification are listed below:

Age Criteria

  • No upper age limit has been defined for the Assistant Professor position.

  • Candidates applying for Junior Research Fellowship should not be more than 28 years of age as on November 1, 2019 (can be relaxed up to 5 years for OBC/SC/ST/PWD/Female Candidates).
  • Maximum relaxation of up to 5 years is allowed for candidates with LLM degree as well as candidates having research experience.

Academic Qualification

  • A master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized University in either Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Electronic Sciences, Computer Science and Applications.
  • A minimum aggregate score of 55% marks in qualifying examination (50% for candidates belonging to reserved category).
  • Candidates appearing for final qualifying examination or awaiting results are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates with a Ph.D. or who completed Master’s Degree on or before September 1991 eligible for a 5% relaxation in the aggregate score of the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates are advised to appear for the subject of their qualifying exam only. Candidates, whose qualifying exam subject is not covered in the subject list specified by UGC, should appear in a related subject.

UGC NET 2019 Application Form

UGC NET 2019 Application Form will be available online, accessible on the official website www.cbsenet.nic.in expectedly from October 2018. Candidates will be able to fill the application form till November 2018. They must use the latest versions of web browsers to complete UGC NET 2019 Application Process. Candidate’s Aadhaar Number is a mandatory detail for UGC NET Online Application Form.

The application process for UGC NET is elaborated below:

  1. Register at the official website with applicants’ name, active email ID and valid mobile number.
  2. Upon successful registration, Application Form Number and Password will be generated.
  3. Re-login to the website and enter applicants’ personal details, contact information, academic details, work experience details, choice of program and exam center preference, accurately.
  4. Upload scanned images of applicants’ recent passport-size colour photograph and specimen signature with the following specifications:

The UGC NET 2019 application fee can be paid both online (Net banking or Credit/Debit Cards) as well as offline (through e-challan, payable at Syndicate/Canara/ICICI Bank). Further details are provided in the following section.

Upon successful completion of application fee payment, a Confirmation Page is generated. Applicants are advised to obtain prints of this Confirmation Page for the records. Please note that candidates need not send the copy of the Confirmation Page to the exam conducting authority.

UGC NET 2019 Application Fee

UGC NET 2019 Application fee can be paid in both offline and online modes.

  • Applicants can make the application fee payment online through the integrated payment gateway on the official website using either Net Banking or Credit/Debit Cards.
  • For offline application fee payment, applicants need to obtain a print of the e-challan from the website and make payment at any Syndicate/ICICI/Canara Bank branch. Applicants then need to enter the details stamped on the challan to the UGC NET online application form on the official website in order to complete the process.

UGC-NET 2019 Admit Card

UGC NET 2019 Admit Card or Admission Card is expected to be available for download from the official website in December 2018. Applicants who have submitted their UGC NET 2019 Application Form complete in all respects along with the requisite fees will be issued the Admit Card. The same has to be downloaded from the official website. Please note that there are no other means of accessing the document other than downloading from the website.

Details like Applicant’s name, Registration Number, Photograph, Date of Birth, Exam Venue, Exam Date, and Timings, etc. will be printed on the Admit Card. It is mandatory for the candidates to carry the Admit Card in person to appear for the entrance exam along with a valid Photo ID Proof.

UGC NET 2019 Admit Card can be downloaded in the following steps:

  1. Visit the official website, i.e. www.cbsenet.nic.in.
  2. Click on the link “UGC NET 2019 Admit Card”.
  3. Enter applicants’ login credentials i.e. the application number and password.
  4. The UGC NET Admit Card will be displayed on-screen.
  5. Download, save and obtain prints of the document for future use.

UGC NET 2019 Exam Centers

UGC NET 2019 is expected to be conducted in 91 cities across India. Applicants can, during the application process, select four exam cities of their choice, in order of preference. The allocation of exam center is done by the exam conducting authority on the basis of the candidates’ preferences. However, the authority’s decision in this regard is final and binding on all.

UGC NET 2019 Exam Pattern

As per the new changes introduced by CBSE in 2017, UGC NET 2019 will consist of 2 papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2 both of which will be conducted in a single day, in two consecutive sessions. The details about CBSE UGC NET 2019 Exam Pattern has been mentioned below.

  • Paper 1 tests candidates’ language skills, reasoning ability, and general awareness. However, Paper 2 consists of subject-related questions.
  • There will be total 150 objective-type questions in 2 sessions, each carrying 2 marks.
  • There will be no provision for negative marking in UGC NET 2019.
  • Total time allotted for the exam in three sessions is 3 hours.

UGC NET 2019 Result

UGC NET 2019 Result will be declared by CBSE at www.cbseresults.nic.in in May 2019.The scorecard can be downloaded within a few days of the declaration of result. The scorecard will have the candidates’ name, roll number, category, subject code, scores secured in each paper, total marks obtained, and the status of candidature for the JRF or Assistant Professorship.

UGC NET 2019 Scorecard can be downloaded in the following steps:

  1. Visit the official website www.cbsenet.nic.in.
  2. Click the link “UGC NET 2019 Result”.
  3. Enter applicants’ login credentials.
  4. UGC NET Scorecard will be displayed on-screen.
  5. Download, save and obtain prints of the document for future use.

Prior to declaration of UGC NET Result 2019, CBSE will release the Answer Keys to each of the question papers for the exam, from which the candidates can draw an estimate of their expected score.

Candidates have the option of challenging UGC NET Answer Key 2019 by filling an online application form on the official website and a payment of 1000 INR per question. The answer key challenge fee can be paid either in online mode (debit/credit card) or offline mode (e-challan). The Final Answer Keys will be released after making required changes (if any) based on candidates’ challenges. UGC NET 2019 result will be prepared for different subjects and categories on the basis of the Final Answer Key.


UGC NET 2019 Cut Off

UGC NET 2019 Cut Off score is the minimum qualifying marks required to be considered eligible for the JRF and Assistant Professor position. CBSE has ear-marked the minimum qualifying marks both general and reserved category candidates at 40% aggregate in both the papers.

However, candidates should bear in mind that just scoring the minimum qualifying marks does not ensure qualification in UGC NET but ensures a position in the Merit List. UGC NET Merit List will be prepared both Subject-wise as well as Category-wise.

For the purpose of preparing the Merit List for UGC NET 2019, the aggregate score secured in all three papers by each individual candidate is taken into consideration. A separate merit list for Junior Research Fellowship will be released from amongst these qualified candidates using the following formula:

Note: A similar formula is used for all the categories and subjects.

Please note that only the top 6% candidates (for each subject and category) from the merit list will be shortlisted for Assistant Professor position.
