SSC CGL is conducted in 4 tiers viz.

  • SSC CGL Tier II – Objective Type exam
  • SSC CGL Tier III - Descriptive Test
  • SSC CGL Tier IV - Computer Proficiency Test

The following article informs candidates about all the changes made in the examination. Let us take a look at the changes which have been done in SSC CGL 2017 exam –

1) Change in Exam Duration in Tier I

  • Earlier, SSC CGL Tier I had a total of 100 questions to be completed within 75 minutes.
  • However, this pattern has changed slightly. Now candidates have to complete 100 objective type questions within the time limit of only 60 minutes. CheckSSC CGL Pattern
  • All other things will remain the same, the only change being a reduction of 15 minutes from the time allotted to candidates.
  • The reduced time limit may lead to decrease in SSC CGL Cut Off this year.

After the changes, the examination pattern of SSC CGL Tier I looks like this –

2) Increase in Grade Pay of some posts

  • A good news for CGL aspirants is that grade pay of some of the posts has been revised.
  • This revision has led to an increase in grade pay of 3 posts, namely, Sub-Inspector (CBI),
  • Inspector of Posts (P)
  • Inspector (Narcotics)

3) Clarification of Age Limit for some posts

Earlier there was a confusion regarding the maximum age limit for some posts under SSC CGL. These posts were Examiner, Excise Inspector and Preventive Officer. Candidates were confused that the maximum age for these posts is either 27 or 30 years, as no such clarification was there in the notification.

However, now it has been made clear that the maximum age limit for all these three posts is 30 years. This is another big relief for candidates as more candidates can now appear for these prestigious posts under SSC CGL examination. CheckSSC CGL Eligibility

4) New Post Introduced

SSC has introduced a new post under SSC CGL. This post is Assistant Accounts Officer and it comes under Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). This post falls under A-Grade category under SSC CGL’s grouping and increases the desirability of this exam and this is a highly respectable job. The code of this job is ‘$’ and grade pay for this post is INR 4800. One more post, named, Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office has also been introduced.

Note: This year, Staff Selection Commission has removed the post of Compiler.

5) Addition of new examination centers

SSC CGL 2017 is an online examination, therefore, it is conducted at places having complete connectivity and computer facility. But as computer penetration is still not enough in our country, SSC holds the exam at limited number of cities. Due to this reason the exam witnesses very low attendance. Last year, it was reported (unofficially) that 55% of the candidates that applied for the exam, did not appear in the actual examination. CheckSSC CGL Exam Centers

Therefore, to make it easy for candidates belonging to smaller cities, SSC has added some more cities to its list of examination centers. Tabulated below are the new exam centers for CGL exam:

StateCity
MaharashtraAhmadnagar
MaharashtraAlibaug
RajasthanBharatpur
OdishaBehrampore
Andhra PradeshVijaywada
TelanganaWarangal
TelanganaNizamabad

6) Grouping of posts for application form

As mentioned earlier, SSC CGL has around 30 jobs under its ambit. All these posts have their own unique codes. Candidates, while filling the application forms, had to select fill their preferred jobs using the codes. This was a cumbersome process as to select from 30 jobs and arrange them in order of preference was not that simple.

However, SSC CGL has done a great job this year to group all the jobs into 4 categories, namely A, B, C and D. Candidates now just need to enter these four codes in order of their preference. And this makes it very simple to fill the preferences, as the easiest order is ABCD itself. CheckHow to fill SSC CGL Online Application Form
