The position of tax assistant in both CBDT and CBEC comes under the Group C posts of the government of India. This post has a grade pay of Rs 2400 and the attached pay band is Rs 5200-20200 which is the pay band 1 of the government. This calculation is before seventh pay commission recommendations came into force, thus the gross salary of a tax assistant in a class X city was around Rs 27000 before the pay revision and after the revision of the seven pay commission, the same is around Rs 36000. Also, most of the time, these people get postings in metro cities or state capitals only.

Tax Assistant as the name suggests is an assistant level post. You will be posted in one of the two levels i.e. either in assessment of tax or in non-assessment.
If you are posted in evaluation, the work is related to evaluation of the income tax of an individual or a partnership firm or even a company. In addition to that, you will be responsible for feeding that data in the computer, clerical work like work related to diary and dispatch, noting, drafting etc. or to accompany the raid team.
A tax assistant is promoted to Senior Tax Assistant after a service of 3 years after the joining and can become Excise inspector/PO in next 3-4 years. For examiner this time period is longer. STA usually takes 8-9 years to become examiner which means a total of 12 years because waiting to become examiner is very long.
Promotions in this service depends on the number of vacancies that are available in the candidate’s region and one must also pass the departmental examination.
