Karnataka PGCET: Eligibility Guidelines for GATE Qualifiers

    Karnataka PGCET is a state level entrance examination conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). Candidates seeking admissions into the full time/part time MBA/MCA/M. Arch/M. Tech/ME and 2nd year (lateral entry) of the MCA program can apply for the exam. Candidates with valid GATE scores and seeking admission into M. Arch/ME/M. Tech programs are exempted from taking the entrance test. However, it is mandatory for such candidates to fill the application form and fulfil the eligibility conditions as well as meet the cut-off score.  In this article, we discuss the exact guidelines laid down by KEA for GATE qualified candidates.

    It is worthwhile to mention here that GATE Score is considered valid if, at the time of application, the test was taken less than 3 years back. For example, if a candidate appeared for GATE in 2016, then his score will be considered valid for admission in 2018. However, apart from the score being valid, it should also meet the specific cut-off for the particular program.

    Karnataka PGECET participating educational establishments like VTU, UBDT and UVCE offer more than 100 ME/M. Tech programs in various Engineering and Technology disciplines. It also offers four M. Arch programs and one MBA in Infrastructure Management program. The eligibility guidelines for GATE qualified candidates are:

    • GATE qualifiers with an Engineering and Technology Bachelor Degree are eligible to apply for admission to the M. Tech programs under VTU, Belgaum.
    • Valid GATE score holders are given first preference for admission to all ME/M. Tech/M. Arch programs.
    • Such candidates are exempt from appearing for Karnataka PGCET, though they are required to apply online for admission.
    • While applying, write GATE code, then the score obtained in the test and GATE stream.
    • In case candidates do not have valid qualifying GATE score in their respective subjects and category (GM/OBC/SC/ST/PD), they will have to appear for Karnataka PGCET.


    • The reservation criteria (OBC/SC/ST/PD) are applicable to persons of Karnataka domicile only.
    • Candidates claiming reservation under sponsored quota is not entitled to claiming seat under any other quota.

    General PGCET Eligibility applicable for GATE Qualifiers

    A candidate holding a valid GATE score that meets the cut-off criteria is exempted from appearing in Karnataka PGECET for admission in ME/M. Arch/M. Tech provided he/she meets all other eligibility conditions laid down by the KEA. Tabulated below is the general eligibility criteria applicable for GATE Qualified candidates:

    DomicileThe candidates should be domicile residents of Karnataka.
    AcademicCandidates should have completed B. Tech/BE/B. Arch program from a university recognized by the KEA.
    Qualifying ScoreCandidates should have secured an overall aggregate of 50% marks (45% for reserved category candidates) in the final qualifying examination.

    ME/M. Tech/M. Arch (Part-Time Mode) for GATE Qualifiers

    Candidates willing to pursue the afore-mentioned programs in the part-time mode needs to have a work experience of not less than 3 years in a single organization as on July 31 of the year of admission in addition to all the general eligibility criteria. Also, the candidate’s present work-place should be situated within a radial distance of 40 km from the institution in which admission is being sought. Part-time program applicants also need to submit a filled-in NOC duly signed by the competent authority. Please note, M. Tech program in the part-time program shall be conducted only if the number of candidates enrolled is at least eight or more.

    GATE Scholarships

    GATE Scholarships are awarded by AICTE. KEA has no role in the awarding or disbursal of the scholarships. Applications for GATE Scholarships are processed by respective colleges/institutions where the applicant has enrolled. The guidelines for applying for GATE Scholarship are:

    • Candidates with valid GATE score can only apply for GATE Scholarships.
    • GATE Score holders opting for Sponsored Quota seats are not entitled to GATE stipend.
    • SC/ST/OBC candidates with valid GATE Score claiming any other scholarship from the government of Karnataka/India will not be considered for GATE Scholarship.
    • GATE qualified candidates seeking admission into ME/M. Tech programs in the part-time mode will not be entitled to GATE stipend.
