“All preparations for introducing the four year integrated B.Ed course have been done and a notification has been issued. The course will start from this session (2020-21) itself” said the minister in Rajya Sabha.
Integrated 4 year B.Ed will be available in three streams which are BA, B.Com and B.Sc. The step is taken in the wake of making teaching profession a priority and a well planned career rather than a last resort.
Having students to take admission into the program right after their class 12 board examination and increasing the course duration from two years to four years makes it an exclusive teaching profession rather than a last resort.
Prakash Javadekar, former HRD minister had announced this change while addressing principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in a conference on February 7, 2020. Later, referring to the announcement, he tweeted “Teaching should become a profession of choice but not a profession of leftover that is why we are introducing 4-year integrated B.Ed course in the coming academic year” Read About CTET 2020
In the beginning of year 2018 the government had clued about swapping up of 2-year B.Ed program with the four year integrated B.Ed program. Soon after, in the Budget 2018 speech on February 1, Arun Jaitely, the Finance Minister of India, had made statements confirming the dropping of 2-year B.Ed program in favor of the upcoming integrated 4-year B.Ed course.
Students who want to pursue teaching as a profession can appear for Uttar Pradesh BED JEE, Chhattisgarh PRE BED, Madhya Pradesh PRE BED Maharashtra BED CET, Telangana State EDCET and Andhra Pradesh EDCET to name a few.
NCTE officials said the move has been made to ensure that only serious students who aspire teaching as their profession right from the beginning opt for the integrated B.Ed program. It will block the unwanted competition in the teaching profession and give aspirants a professional edge like other courses such as B.Tech, MBBS, CA, 5-year integrated LLB etc. Read About UPTET 2020
Prior to this amendment, B.Ed was a two-year program for students aspiring to make teaching their profession. Students were required to possess a graduate degree in any discipline before applying for B.ed course. For B.Ed could be done after pursuing graduation in any discipline or in other words the program was open to all the students from any field of study, the course was mismanaged and was not coming to its fruition rather wrongly utilized by job hunters. Four to five lakhs candidates applying for UPBED JEE each year in Uttar Pradesh only conveys the unprofessionalism in teaching evidently.
Students failing to get placement in their respective field join B.Ed to become teachers making teaching a last resort. To curb this the govt has taken this step. A similar change was brought in 2014 making B.Ed a 2-year program from a one year program.
