Admission in Foreign Universities Through GATE Score

GATE is a national level exam conducted for candidates to pursue a postgraduate or Ph.D. program in the field of engineering and technology. The exam has international recognition as well. Some universities in Singapore and Germany accept admissions to postgraduate courses through the scores in GATE.

  • From Singapore, two world-class universities namely, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), consider GATE percentile valid for admission to coursework based or research-based programs.
  • Only Indian applicants can apply through GATE scores. The minimum required percentile is 90.
  • The Technical University of Munich and RWTH Aachen, Germany, also admit Indian students to the postgraduate engineering courses based on this exam.
  • Other than obtaining 90 percentile in GATE 2020, candidates will have to sit for English proficiency test to get admission to these universities.
  • Along with the above, a good percentage/CGPA must be obtained from a Bachelor’s degree.

Basic Eligibility for GATE Qualifiers for Admission to Foreign University

It is of utmost importance for candidates who wish to pursue post graduate engineering courses from foreign universities using GATE Scores, to know the eligibility requirements set by them. GATE scores are acceptable at four universities apart from India, which are located in Singapore and Germany. 

Find below the common grounds at which these universities admit aspirants from India for admission to PG engineering courses:

  • Secure at least 90 percentile in GATE exam.
  • GATE scores of three years at most will be considered valid.
  • To acknowledge the language proficiency requirement, obtaining certification from TOEFL/IELTS. 

Universities in Singapore and Germany that accept GATE scores have been given below with all the details regarding eligibility, duration, fees and application process.

National University of Singapore (NUS)

The two world-class universities in Singapore which admit GATE qualifying candidates are, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nan Yang Technological University Singapore (NTU).

The National University of Singapore is one of the best universities in Singapore. The University has been ranked among the top 20 universities in QS University Rankings. GATE qualifiers can apply for admissions to research-based MS programs or Ph.D. programs.  

Note that GATE scorecard of last three year is acceptable. The minimum GATE cut off to get admission in this university is 90 percentile. Other details are as follows:

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants should have good GPA/percentage in Bachelor’s degree (at least second class honors). GATE score is set at minimum 90 percentile. Also, those whose native language is not English will be required to obtain a good score in TOEFL or IELTS. 


The duration of a Masters Program is between 1 and 3 years, whereas a Ph.D. program’s duration is from 2 to 5 years.

Tuition fees

10000~17220 SGD (Singapore dollars) in Rupees approximately 3 to5 Lakh Indian Rupees per year.

NUS Application Process for GATE Qualifiers

The enrollment for Master’s courses at NUS is generally done in two sessions- January and August session. However, for international applicants, application forms are available in mid-October every year. Following steps will be included for eligible candidates to enroll themselves.

  • Ensure that you completely fulfill the eligibility requirements demanded the particular course.
  • Once sure, go to the official web portal saying ‘International Qualification Applying to NUS’ and click on Apply here.
  • Candidates will have to fill in one application form through online mode and make an electronic payment of $20.
  • The application fee will be non-refundable.
  • Application form must be duly filled and submitted at the same portal with the required list of documents in the same order as asked.

Required documents basically include the following:

  • National level High school examination results slip (if applicable)
  • School examination results slip e.g. Year 11 High School transcripts/ SPM/ IGSCE/ Indian Standard 10
  • University academic transcripts (only applicable to applicants applying for 3-year Law Programme)
  • Additional results slip (if scores are indicated in the application form) e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, SAT and SAT Subject Test scores, AP, ACT etc.
  • Passport / Birth Certificate / Identification Card (clearly reflecting your Full Name and Date of Birth)
  • Medical report(s) if you have or had any illnesses or disabilities (if applicable)
  • Criminal record(s) (if applicable)

Apart from the above-mentioned documents, applicants will be required to submit academic documents as per the requirement of the program applied for.

Nan Yang Technological University Singapore (NTU)

NTU is ranked 13 in the QS world university ranking.The university accepts GATE scores for the admission in PhD and M.Eng programmes. The minimal cut off for the admission in this university is 90 percentile in GATE. NTU accepts GATE scores in the following schools:

  • School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
  • School of Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • School of Computer Engineering
  • School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • School of Materials Science and Engineering
  • School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Tuition Fee

For Master’s program, minimum required GPA is 2.5, while for research program required GPA stands at 3. Indian Applicants must have acquired GATE Score with minimum 90 percentile. Apart from these, English proficiency certificate must be produced (TOEFL/IELTS).


Minimum duration for masters’s program is between 1 year and 3 years. 

NTU Application Process for GATE Qualifiers 

The application process at NTU will is conducted in two sessions, i.e. August and January. Find below the details for the same.

  • Go to the official website and look for Application link for international candidates, click on it,
  • A new window will appear on the screen with instructions and information to fill in the application form, from there redirect to the application form by clicking on “Apply Now”
  • Fill in the application form through digital mode only.
  • After entering all the details, click on fee payment option.
  • Make payment of $21.40 through online mode and click on submit.
  • Check the application status to know about acceptance or decline. 

Technical University of Munich

Some universities in Germany also accept GATE Score for the admission in postgraduate programs. The 2 famous Universities accepting GATE score are Technical University of Munich and  RWTH Aachen University.

Technical University of Munich is one of the foreign universities which accept GATE Score for the admission in postgraduate programs. It is ranked 60 in QS world university ranking. The details regarding PG admissions through GATE have been given below:


According to TUM guidelines, a candidate must have valid GATE score. Also, bachelors degree in relevant field is a must. 

Tuition Fee

Per semester fee for TUM PG programs is 500 euros. The faculties where GATE qualifiers can apply are- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

TUM Application Process for GATE Qualifiers 

Application Process for winter session will begin in January, while summer sessions commence in September. The application forms are filled via online portal only, following are the steps which must be performed to fill the application form.

  • Create a TUMonline account, enter the required details.
  • Upload the required documents such as a personal statement explaining why you have chosen this master’s program and TUM specifically, CV/résumé, an essay of approx. 1,000 words in German or English on a specified topic, a passport size photo.
  • Apart from submitting the application form through online mode, submit the following documents as hardcopy:
  1. a printout of your application form with your signature
  2. form "Analysis of the Curriculum"
  3. a copy of your bachelor's degree certificate, including a list of courses and grades OR an official transcript of records as a notarized photocopy.
  4. proof of your English and/or German language proficiency.
  5. GRE or GATE score if applicable
  6. certificates from professional training or additional qualifications related to the program
  7. a copy of your passport
  8. health insurance card

RWTH Aachen University

RWTH Aachen University also accepts GATE Score for the admission in postgraduate programs. RWTH Aachen is a part of IDEA league and is in collaboration with Imperial College London. It is ranked 145 in Quaquarelli Symonds University Rankings in 2015 and 2016. Given below are the faculties for which the university accepts the GATE Score.

  • Automotive Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Engineering,

The important details regarding admission to PG programs at RWTH Aachen University have been given below:


The minimum criteria for admission to masters programs are 90 percentile in GATE. Applicant should also hold a good CGPA in the Bachelor’s degree.

Tuition Fee

Those who wish to take admission to RWTH Aachen University are required to submit their applications by March 1 if applying for the winter session. If candidates wish to take admission to summer semester, they must apply by September 1, every year.

RWTH Aachen University Application Process for GATE Qualifiers

The Application process for International applicants involves the following steps:

  • Visit the official website and look for Application Forms for International candidates.
  • Fill in the application form completely and upload the required documents.
  • Make sure to download the application form after successful submission and take a print out of it.
  • Send it to the International Office before the last date. 

Required documents basically include the following:

  • Transcript of Records
  • Resume
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Two Recommendation Letters

Note that these documents must be uploaded as pdf files separately while filling the online application form.
