BARC Recruitment through GATE Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the nation’s premier nuclear research facility based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, operating a number of research reactors across the country. BARC recruits graduate engineers every year for the post of Trainee Scientist Officer through GATE score.

Application form for BARC recruitment will be available from January 23, 2020 (tentative). The application fee is INR 500, it can be paid in online mode through Debit card, Credit card or Net banking.

Latest: IIT Madras has scheduled GATE 2020 for February 1, 2, 8 & 9, 2020 in CBT mode. Registrants can download their GATE Admit Card from January 4, 2020.

There are 2 types of recruitment opportunities available for GATE applicants in BARC - OCES (One-year Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) and DGFS ( Two Year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates).

Important Dates for BARC Recruitment through GATE 2020

The registration process for the Recruitment of Trainee Scientific Officer by BARC through GATE exam starts on January 23, 2020. A candidate has to visit the official website of BARC for applying for the post. Candidate should have a valid GATE Registration number before applying online. Check the table given below for complete schedule.

BARC Recruitment: Number of Vacancies

BARC has released the official notification for recruitment for the post of Trainee Scientific Officers through its academics programs.

  • Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES). 
  • DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS) for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates.
  • On successful completion of the respective programs, the Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) and DGFS Fellows will be recruited as Scientific Officers (Group A post of Government of India) and appointed at various DAE units or Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. 
  • The exact number of vacancies for the post will be announced later.

BARC Recruitment: Job Profile

A Trainee Scientific Officer (TSO) who upon the completion of his/her training program secures a minimum of fifty percent aggregate marks is declared to have completed the training successfully and is subsequently posted in any one of the DAE units as Scientific Officers.

  • OCES is a one-year training program for engineering graduates and science postgraduates.
  • The training program is conducted at the five BARC Training Schools situated in Mumbai, Kalpakkam, Indore and Hyderabad.
  • The duration of the program is two years. 
  • The job profile of a Scientific Officer mainly involves research and development pertaining to nuclear science and technology.

TSOs are provided with necessary facilities and opportunities to acquire knowledge and there by also enhance it and develop skills mainly with respect to research and development with regard to nuclear science and technology

BARC Recruitment: Salary

OCES TSOs are paid a stipend of INR 35,000 during the period of their Training whereas DGFS Fellows are paid a stipend of INR 20,000 per month during their M.Tech. Both OCES TSOs and DGFS Fellows are paid a one-time book allowance of INR 10,000. DGFS Fellows have reimbursed the tuition fee paid to their Institutes for pursuing the M. Tech./M.Chem.Engg. program.

  • An important point of note is that a revision of DGFS stipend to INR 35,000 p.m. is under consideration.
  • Appointment in all the units will be as a Scientific Officer (C) in the PAY BAND-III (15,600 INR-39,100 INR) with a Grade Pay of 5,400 INR.
  • The appointment is made at the beginning of the pay scale with OCES TSOs getting two or three increments depending on their performance during the OCES program. 
  • DGFS Fellows getting three or four increments depending on their performance in M.Tech./M.Chem.Engg. and four-month Orientation Course for DGFS Fellows (OCDF).
  • Total Monthly Emoluments (with three increments) at the time of joining including Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance at the present rate will be approximately 61,000 (upward pay revision is under consideration of the 7th Central Pay Commission).
  • In addition, other Allowances such as Leave Travel Concession by air, every year up to first eight years (subject to conditions) and once in two years thereafter, Children’s Education Allowance and an annual Professional Update Allowance are also payable. A comprehensive Contributory Health Service Scheme for employees and dependent family members is also available.
  • DGFS Fellows whose performance is below a specified threshold will receive zero increments.

BARC Recruitment: Eligibility

Candidates wishing to apply for BARC recruitment have to fulfill the complete eligibility criteria prescribed by the authority. The academic eligibility in terms of the academic qualification is described below

  1. Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply. 
  2. Candidates should have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in their qualifying degree.
  3. A valid GATE score as required by the organization in the same engineering discipline as the qualifying degree discipline.
  4. Candidates whose final results are awaited are also eligible to apply. However, if such a candidate is selected, he/she must submit their mark-sheet of final result by 30th November 2020.

Age Limit

  • General category-26 years
  • OBC category-29 years
  • SC/ST category-31 years
  • Dependent of those who died in the riots of 1984-31 years
  • Physically challenged candidates, irrespective of their categories are eligible for an age relaxation of upto ten years
  • Persons domiciled in the Kashmir division of the state of Jammu & Kashmir from 1st January 1981 to 31st December 1990 – 31 years.

BARC Recruitment: Application Process

The registration is done in online mode. Candidates who wish to apply can submit the application form on the official website of BARC. All the applications should be submitted till deadline. 

  • After creating his/her account for registration, candidates must log in through the same fill in the form involving personal details, academic qualifications.
  • While filling the form candidates are also required to upload their recent passport size photograph and a scanned copy of their signature.
  • Candidates applying on the basis of their GATE score must enter the same. 
  • Applicants have to pay an application fee of INR 500. It can be paid in online mode throughj net banking/ debit card/ credit card and bank challan through State Bank of India.
  • After the payment has bee made, the candidate must wait for three for the payment to be verified. Once the payment is verified, candidates shall receive an e-mail from BARC itself.
  • Once the candidate has received the mail, the candidate is required to complete the remaining form and submit the same.
  • In case of non-receipt of the mail, the candidate can contact the helpdesk for the same.
  • Candidates who fail to submit the complete form within the given frame of time, will be disqualified.

Instructions regarding uploading the documents. 

For scanned photograph

  1. The photograph must be a recent colour passport size photograph (4.5x3.5cm) and the size of the image should not be more than 50kb. It should be in JPG format only. 
  2. In case the size of the image is more than 50kb, the setting of the scanner such as resolution, number of colours can be adjusted during the process of scanning.
  3. Also caps, hats and dark glasses are not allowed and religious headwear though permitted should not cover the face.

For scanned signature

The candidate has to sign on a white paper with a black ink pen (2x4.5cm) and the size of the signature not more than 20kb. It should be in JPG format only.

  • Caste/Category certificate (for SC/ST/OBC candidates)
  • Discharge certificate in case of Ex-Servicemen candidates
  • Disability Certificate, indicating the type of disability (in case of PWD)

  • Scanned signature
  • One set of self-attested photocopies of all the documents listed
  • Any other documents/details regarding the eligibility criteria.

BARC Recruitment: Application Fee

Candidates are required to remit the prescribed fee online through Debit card, Credit card or Net banking. Candidates belonging to reserved categories and Physically Challenged Candidates are not required to pay any Application fee.

BARC Recruitment: Selection Process

The selection is done on the basis of GATE score and personal interview. Shortlisted candidates on the basis of GATE score will be called for interview round. Qualified candidates will be recruited for the post. 

  • The interview will be conducted in either Mumbai or Hyderabad during May-June 2020.
  • The final list of candidates selected for OCES and DGFS will be displayed on the official site of GATE.
  • Selected candidates are required to report at BARC centers for completing joining formalities.

Note: The selection is also done on the basis of online entrance test followed by personal interview. The entrance test will be conducted by the official authority.
