Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, GATE is an all-India based entrance Exam for admitting aspirants to various M.Tech (Master of Technology), ME (Master of Engineering), M.S (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) courses across India. GATE 2017 is conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development.

GATE is a national level online based exam to check the aspirant’s knowledge in the core subjects of his or her undergraduate programme. It is a mandatory exam that one has to clear in order to get admission in various Postgraduate Programmes offered in India. The GATE Score is primary criterion for giving admission to the aspirants to various programmes offered by the premier colleges in the country including IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) has been selected as the organizing institute for GATE 2017. The official notification relating to the same was posted on June 25, 2016 on the official website. The candidates can visit the official website to get more details regarding the same.

GATE 2017 exam is scheduled in the month of February. GATE application process of 2017 will commence in the month of September and the candidates can apply till October. The complete schedule for GATE 2017 is available on the official website of GATE.GATE 2017 Application process is an online process. GATE Online Processing System (GOAPS) web portal will be live on September 01, 2016 and the candidates will have access to GOAPS web portal for enrollment, application filling and application submission till October 04, 2016. GATE 2017 exam is an online test which will be scheduled for four days in the month of February. GATE 2017 exam will be conducted on February 4 & 5, 2017 and February 11 & 12, 2017. GATE Admit card for 2017 will be available to the candidates on January 05, 2017 on the official GOAPS portal. Earlier GATE XE paper sections had only 7 sections i.e. A to H but for the academic year 2016-17, IITR has increased the number of sections by 8. The new section of XE paper is based on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (section H).

The interested candidates are advised to keep a close check on the important dates of GATE 2017. The important dates of GATE 2017 are listed below:

As the official dates for the exam have been announced, the candidates should now prepare themselves for it. As the exam is an online test which will be scheduled for four days i.e. on February 4 & 5, 2017 and February 11 & 12, 2017. The candidate should prepare themselves in such a way that they are confident enough on the day of the exam.

Before thinking of giving the GATE exam, the candidate should first go through the GATE Eligibility criteria. This is because, if the candidate does not qualify for the eligibility criteria his or her plan to step into the next level i.e. GATE Application Process might not happen. If the candidate is eligible to sit for the exam, then the next step for them is to go through the GATE Application Process. In this the candidate is supposed to fill in the application form or register themselves for the exam via online mode only. Here, they will have to fill the basic details that are required, with a fee that they would have to pay and provide the GATE necessary documents for the same.

After this the next step is the issuing of the GATE Admit Card. The admit card is supposed to be downloaded from the official website only. After providing all the necessary details correctly, the candidate will then be issued the Admit Card. This would be a gateway for the candidate, that would help them till the end of the exam. Therefore, this document is supposed to be kept safe by the candidate.
The candidate should know that they have to bring a printed copy of the admit card to the GATE Test Center along with at least one original and valid photo identification. The only permitted photo identifications are: Driving license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, College ID, Employee identification card, or a notarized affidavit which contains the candidate’s Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. The details of this ID proof have to be given while filling the online application.
After being fully assured about if the candidate is eligible to sit for the exam. It is important for them to go through the GATE Syllabus and start planning for the same. They should thoroughly go through every topic and then start making the plan.
GATE is held for the 23 papers (including petroleum engineering introduced last year). The candidates are required to choose only one paper as per his/her choice. There is a separate syllabus for each paper. Therefore, the candidate should go through the syllabus for each topic properly.

GATE consists of only one exam and is an online based one. The number of questions asked in the examination will be 65 questions of objective type and numerical answer type (NAT). The time allotted to solve the question paper will be 3 hours. There is no choice provided for NAT questions as the answers of such questions will be entered manually using the virtual keyboard provided on the computer screen at the time of examination. Out of 65 questions, 10 questions will be asked from the general aptitude section and carry 15 marks. The exam will be of a total of 100 marks. The candidate should answer the questions carefully as there would be negative marking as well.
