GATE AR: Architecture and Planning Preparation Tips

After completing graduation, students who want to make their career in research and development look forward to Master’s degree. The reputed universities like IIT, IISC consider GATE score for admission in their postgraduation courses. Architectural and Planning is one of the papers of GATE and candidates seeking career in the application of engineering principles and technology to building design and construction can take GATE.

This year, IIT Madras has scheduled GATE 2019 on February 2, 3, 9 and 10. The scores are accepted by more than 900+ institutes across India. A lot of changes were introduced in the examination. But, in 2019, the only new thing introduced is Statistics has been added as a new subject/ paper in GATE. There are three sections in the test viz.

  • General Aptitude
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Architecture and Planning (AR)

Architecture is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or any other structures. In the AR paper, the General Aptitude will cover 15% out of 100 marks, and other 85% of the total question paper will be covered by the subject of the paper.

GATE Exam Pattern 2019

Before starting, let’s refresh the Exam Pattern of GATE. The question paper is usually divided into three sections. However, for Architecture there are two sections- one if core subjects and other is General Aptitude.

  • General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks (15 Marks).
  • Remaining 85% of the total marks will be based on the subject of the paper (85 Marks).
  • There is no question from Engineering Mathematics in these papers.
  • NAT includes questions with a value or a real number as their answer.
  • NAT questions will be mentioned with, up to which decimal places, the candidates need to make an answer.
  • The answer has to be entered using the mouse. 
  • There won’t be any choices for these questions.
  • Using the keyboard must be avoided as it will lock your answer panel.
  • There will be no negative marking for NAT questions.

Topics covered in GATE 2019 for Architecture and Planning

The syllabus for the paper is similar to that of previous year. Candidates preparing for the entrance exam can plan their preparation better following the syllabus. It is important that candidates should start their preparation early because the syllabus is vast. For this paper, the syllabus for AR is divided into eight sections-

  • Section 1: Architecture and Design
  • Section 2: Building Materials, Construction and Management
  • Section 3: Building and Structures
  • Section 4: Environmental Planning and Design
  • Section 5: Urban Design
  • Section 6: Urban Planning and Housing
  • Section 7: Planning Techniques and Management
  • Section 8: Services, Infrastructure and Transportation.

GATE Preparation Tips for Architecture and Planning
