University of Madras's establishment was initiated in 1840 and Mr. George Norton was the first president of the university. The university was established on September 5, 1857 after a systematic educational policy was developed by the Government of India.
The last date of application is April 1, 2015 for the admissions of July session. The application Fee is INR 500 but for SC/ST the application is free of cost.
It offers Ph.D. in more than 70 streams. It has full time, Part time (external) and part time (internal) courses. Some of the streams in Ph.D. are:
The candidates applying for the Ph.D. programme should have master's degree with 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST candidates) in the qualifying exam.

Admissions will be made 4 times in a year i.e. January, April, July and October. Application forms can be obtained from the official website of the university on payment of fees i.e. INR 500 but for SC/ST application is free of cost. The last date of application is April 1, 2015.
The admissions will be made in the first month of each session. The application form must be submitted alongwith required documents and Demand Draft of INR 1000/- drawn in favor of "The Registrar, University of Madras" on the address of the concerned head of the departments of the university/ Principals of the university or Directors of recognized Institutions.
