Outlook India has released the Outlook-ICARE Rankings 2026 on its official portal. The list appears on the Outlook education section at outlookindia.com. The Indian Centre for Academic Rankings and Excellence (ICARE) compiled the data. The rankings cover engineering, medical, law, and technical universities. Both government and private institutions feature across separate category lists.
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) tops the government engineering list with 851.79 points. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani leads private engineering with 911.14 points. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi ranks first among government medical universities. The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru heads the government law institutes list.

How Are the Outlook ICARE Rankings Calculated?
The rankings assess institutions across five broad parameters. The final score is calculated out of 1000 points. The five heads are Academic and Research Excellence, Industry Interface and Placement, and Infrastructure and Facilities. The remaining two are Governance and Admissions, and Diversity and Outreach.
Weightage varies slightly by discipline. Engineering categories assign 250 points each to academics and placement. Law and technical rankings weight academic and research excellence more heavily. Infrastructure and governance carry mid-range weightage across all categories.
What Do These Rankings Mean for Students?
The Outlook-ICARE list is a private ranking exercise. It sits alongside the government's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Students should treat it as one input among several.
The parameter-wise scores are useful for shortlisting colleges. A high placement score signals strong recruiter presence. A high research score suits students planning higher studies or PhD tracks.
IIT Madras leads both the government engineering and technical university lists. That double lead makes it the top-ranked technical institution across categories. AIIMS New Delhi and BITS Pilani hold similar lead positions in their respective streams.
