West Bengal Budget 2026 Proposes New IIT, IIM, AIIMS in North Bengal; Check Full List of New Institutes

Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta has presented the West Bengal Budget 2026-27. The Budget proposes several new central institutes for North Bengal, including a new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus, a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campus, and a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). A Sports University has also been proposed. The Budget was tabled on June 22, 2026, in the State Legislative Assembly.

The Budget further proposes a Tribal University in Jhargram, along with new medical colleges in Alipurduar and Paschim Bardhaman. A dedicated cancer hospital for North Bengal has also been announced. This is the first full Budget of the BJP-led state government.

New Institutes Proposed in West Bengal Budget 2026

The Budget lists several new higher education and healthcare institutes, with most planned for the North Bengal region. The proposed institutes are listed below.

Additional MBBS Seats and Sanskrit College Upgrade

The Budget also includes major investments in medical and higher education. A total of 650 new MBBS seats will be added across 13 existing medical colleges in the state. In addition, Sanskrit College, Kolkata, will receive Rs 50 crore for infrastructure and academic upgrades.

Scholarship and School Funding for Students

Under the new proposals, girl students in state-run and state-aided schools will receive Rs 50,000 each. The scholarship is aimed at improving female enrolment in senior classes.

The government has also allocated Rs 2,100 crore for PM Shri schools across the state. The Budget further proposes the establishment of new girls' colleges in selected districts.

West Bengal's Current IIT, IIM and AIIMS Network

West Bengal currently has one operational IIT, IIM, and AIIMS. All three institutions are located in South Bengal, requiring students from northern districts to travel long distances for access to premier institutions.

What Happens Next for Setting Up These New Institutes?

The proposed IIT, IIM, and AIIMS are central institutions, and their establishment requires approval from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

At present, the state government has only announced the proposals in the Budget. Final approval, funding arrangements, and site selection will depend on clearance from the Union Government. The establishment of such institutions typically involves a multi-year process before academic operations can begin.
